Apprentice Data Engineer
Apprentice Data Engineer - West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) / Transport for West Midlands (TfWM)
Are you curious about technology and interested in using data to make a real difference?
This is an exciting opportunity to join Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) as an Apprentice Data Engineer, where you'll gain hands-on experience developing data and technology solutions that support:
- Transport networks
- Public planning and services
- Economic growth across the West Midlands
Work with experienced data engineers and digital specialists to develop skills in:
- Data engineering
- Coding
- Cloud computing (including AWS)
- Automation
- Data visualisation
This role contributes towards your Level 4 DevOps Engineer Apprenticeship, combining practical experience with formal training.
What You Will Be Doing

Support essential data initiatives shaping transport and public service decisions
- Develop and maintain data engineering solutions for the region
- Automate workflows and ensure data quality across systems
- Maintain data pipelines and improve organisational data security

Handle core technical tasks:
- Collect, transform and analyse data using modern AWS and cloud technologies
- Assist in producing dashboards and reporting tools for leadership
- Support strategy development through transport, social and economic data analysis

Work collaboratively in cross-organisational projects while studying towards your qualification.

Contribute to projects helping improve decision-making, investment strategies, and service delivery.
Essential Requirements
Applicants must demonstrate:
- Teamwork experience from education or volunteer work
- Computer literacy, including proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Strong analytical and numerical reasoning skills with ability to:
- Evaluate information
- Identify structured solutions
- Clear written and verbal communication
- Meticulous attention to detail with effective time management
- Self-motivation and willingness to:
- Learn aggressively
- Take initiative
- Adapt to technical challenges
- Ability to work well in a hybrid schedule (remote and office-based)

Qualifications:
- Completion of a Level 3 qualification in Computer Science (includes A Levels, BTECs, or T Levels)
- GCSEs in English and Maths at Grade 4/C or equivalent

- Location: 16 Summer Lane, Birmingham (B19 3SD)
- Working model: Hybrid with flexible office/remote schedules
- Study commitment: Dedicated learning time in your workweek

Essentials - Competence Waiver
