GTG Training are recruiting for an Apprentice Heavy Mechanic on behalf of an independent garage. This is a fantastic opportunity for those ready to advance their career within the automotive industry.

About the Role

The Modern Apprenticeship Programme allows apprentices to work full-time while earning an income and putting theory into practice within a training environment. You will split your time between the training centre (week block release) and your workplace, where regular assessments and reviews will take place. Your training will be designed to ensure you gain the skills needed to successfully complete your apprenticeship.

What Might a Typical Day Look Like?

You will be based within the garage workshop, learning all aspects of vehicle repair and maintenance, including:

  • Vehicle servicing
  • MOT preparation
  • Removal, replacement, and overhaul of major components
  • Electrical fault diagnostics

Key Units Covered

  • Materials, fabrication, tools, and measuring devices in an automotive environment
  • Inspection of heavy vehicles
  • Diagnosing and rectifying chassis units, including pneumatic braking systems and components
  • Diagnosing and rectifying faults in:
    • Vehicle engines and components
    • Vehicle transmissions and component faults
    • Vehicle electrical systems
  • Isolating and re-energising high voltage systems on an electric vehicle
  • Ensuring health and safety compliance
  • Contributing to workplace good housekeeping

What Will You Learn?

Through dedicated mentorship from GTG and your workplace, you’ll train to achieve an SCQF Level 7 in Heavy Goods and Public Service Vehicle Maintenance and Repair.

Regular assessments and reviews in your workplace will ensure you’re developing the necessary skills.

Requirements & Qualifications

Required

  • The ability to achieve or hold National 4 or above in:
    • English
    • Maths
    • Either a Science or Technical Subject
