Job Introduction
Ready to build your future from the ground up? Join Tarmac as an Apprentice Operative and become part of the team that’s shaping the UK’s infrastructure!
We are currently seeking an Apprentice Operative to join our Cement Plant Team at Dunbar.
At Tarmac, our Operatives are the heartbeat of our business - helping to manufacture the essential materials that shape roads, buildings, and infrastructure across the country. As an Apprentice Operative, you’ll be part of a team that works with purpose, pride, and precision.
You’ll play a key role in producing high-quality materials and hitting our production targets — all while learning the ropes and building a career from the ground up.
What you’ll be doing...
Your day-to-day will be varied, practical, and full of learning opportunities. Activities may include:
- Safety First: Supporting a safe working environment and upholding our high safety standards.
- Production Operations: Learning to operate and monitor crushers, mills, kilns, and conveyors. Assisting in controlling process parameters to ensure consistent quality and efficiency.
- Packing Plant: Supporting automated bagging lines, palletising, and quality checks. Helping maintain dust control systems and upholding product standards.
- Rail Loading: Assisting with bulk cement loading into railcars, inspect equipment, and coordinating with logistics to ensure safe and timely dispatch.
- Quarry Operations: Learning how raw materials are extracted, crushed, and transported. Supporting equipment inspections, assisting with haulage coordination, and gaining exposure to blasting and environmental controls.
- Maintenance & Housekeeping: Conducting routine inspections, supporting basic maintenance tasks, and contributing to a clean, safe working environment.
- Working collaboratively to drive continuous improvement and strong team communication
- Taking pride in your work and being determined to succeed
- Life on site! You will work both inside and outside, sometimes in a dusty or confined environment. However, your health and safety are our number one priority and full protective clothing is provided. Your colleagues are also there to help and look out for you, as safety is everyone’s responsibility.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
