Quantity Surveying Technician Apprentice – Civil Engineering

Apprenticeships at JN Bentley are hands-on from day one. With a dedicated mentor, you’ll shadow site professionals—both in the office and on-site—while developing essential skills in civil engineering and quantity surveying.
You’ll work on live construction projects, progressing from initial tender stages through to final delivery and contract completion. Training under an experienced Quantity Surveyor, you’ll master cost management, subcontractor negotiations, and financial/account reporting—critical for optimising project profitability while maintaining quality standards.
What You’ll Do
- Manage the commercial aspects of construction projects, ensuring cost efficiency without compromising standards.
- Split your time between the office and construction sites, coordinating payments, cost reports, and stakeholder relationships.
- Collaborate closely with project teams to identify and resolve challenges.
- Build and maintain professional relationships with clients and subcontractors.
- Participate in procurement, contract negotiations, and commercial valuations, including subcontractor payment processes.
- Submit monthly Client Application For Payments (AFP’s)—critical for project financing.
- Attend project control meetings to track progress and performance.
- Develop and analyse cost reports for accurate financial forecasting, both internally and for clients.

What You’ll Need
Two-year Level 4 Construction Quantity Surveying Technician Apprenticeship: Entry Requirements
- 5 GCSEs (grades A-C / 4-9), including English and Mathematics.
- 1-2 A Levels (or equivalent, e.g. BTEC/T Level) in a relevant, technical discipline.
- Valid UK driving licence (travel to operational sites is mandatory).
- Strong team player skills, with self-motivation, reliability, and ability to work under pressure.
- Analytical problem-solving ability with excellent written and verbal communication.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in financial/technical reporting.
- Flexibility and willingness to travel across your regional network.
