Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship

Teaching Assistants deliver individual and small group teaching within and outside the classroom environment and apply a range of strategies to support learners of different abilities under the professional direction and supervision of a qualified teacher.

What you'll do at work

  • Contribute to the planning of differentiated learning activities for individual or small groups of pupils with all vulnerable groups to support progress/attainment, delivering activities inside or outside the classroom
  • Support the teaching of a broad and balanced curriculum aimed at pupils achieving their full potential in all areas of learning
  • Use ICT skills to advance pupils’ learning
  • Through observations, provide regular feedback to teachers on pupil progress, attainment and barriers to learning
  • Support class teachers with maintaining good order and discipline among pupils, managing behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment
  • Monitor, record and report on progress and attainment
  • Contribute to the overall ethos, aims and work of the academy
  • Support in unstructured times such as breaktimes and lunchtimes
  • Run interventions supporting small groups contributing to pupil outcomes
  • Build positive relationships with pupils, promoting high self-esteem and independence
  • Adapt communication style to respond to pupils according to their individual needs and capabilities
  • Support pupils with their social, emotional and mental health needs, escalating concerns where appropriate, liaising with the teams responsible
  • Promote high standards of behaviour, responding to incidents in line with the academy’s behaviour policy and guidelines on physical intervention

What you'll learn

  • Apply strategies to support and encourage the development of independent learners.
  • Adapt communication strategies for the audience and context.
  • Apply behaviour management strategies in line with organisational policy.
  • Adapt resources to support all learners.
  • Communicate with teachers to ensure clarity of the TA’s role.
  • Apply teaching strategies to deliver learning activities or interventions.
  • Build relationships with learners, teachers, other professionals and stakeholders.
  • Comply with legislation, guidance, and procedures for Prevent, safeguarding and health & safety.
  • Support the well-being and mental health of learners.
  • Observe, record, and report on learners in line with organisational procedures.
  • Apply methods of formative assessment.
  • Use up to date technology safely, to support learning.
  • Encourage safe use of technology by learners.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to support all learners (for example, scaffolding, open questioning).
  • Identify and respond to pastoral and academic behaviours in learners.
  • Provide feedback to learners.

Training schedule

The training will take place at Monkshouse Primary Academy - with the trainer visiting every 4-6 weeks

Essential qualifications

  • GCSE in:
    • English (grade 4)
    • Maths (grade 4)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Other requirements

  • You will have to pass an enhanced DBS check before starting the apprenticeship
