About the Role

This is a unique and exciting opportunity for a career in the design and/or manufacture of leading-edge RF/Microwave electronic components for use in the aerospace, defence, and medical industries, specifically oriented around the electronics aspect of engineering.

Candidates will be expected to discuss their interest in electronics at interview stage. The apprenticeship can be the first step in a long and rewarding career within this unique engineering discipline. It will involve learning most of the disciplines required to manufacture Alaris Linwave's leading-edge RF and Microwave products. Success in the Apprenticeship may lead to further opportunities to embark on higher level education.

Duties

Duties will include, but will not be limited to:

  • Assembly techniques including SMT soldering, wiring assemblies, box build assemblies, and lid sealing processes
  • DC testing and verification of the power supply and digital electronic designs
  • RF testing and optimisation of microwave products

Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

Course Contents

  • Reading, interpreting and understanding the component or assembly specification, diagrams, drawings and work instructions.
  • Planning component or assembly task – materials, tools and equipment.
  • Preparing work area for component or assembly task; sourcing required resources, tools and equipment.
  • Carry out relevant planning and preparation activities before commencing work activity and know how to source required resources and interpret detailed drawings, specifications and job instructions.
  • Checking tools during and after task completion; identifying and reporting defects.
  • Measuring and testing, checking or inspecting component or assembly for example; use of micrometers, verniers, multimeters, voltmeter.
  • Problem solving; analysing the issue and fixing the issue where appropriate.
  • Applying improvement techniques; recommending or implementing solutions where appropriate.
  • Communicating with colleagues or customers (internal or external).
  • Completing component or assembly documentation for example job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation.
  • Reporting work outcomes or issues.
  • Restoring the work area on completion of the activity; returning any resources and consumables to the appropriate location and housekeeping.
  • Disposing of waste in accordance with waste streams; re-cycling, re-using where appropriate.
  • Operating within limits of responsibility.
  • Operating in line with quality, health and safety and environmental policy and procedures; identifying risks and hazards and identifying control measures where applicable.

Training Schedule

The apprentice will work towards their Apprenticeship Standard in Level 3 Engineering Fitter (Elec). The successful candidate will be assigned a dedicated assessor who will provide support and guidance throughout the course. This is a day release programme, which means you will attend Lincoln College, term time only. This will fall within your contracted working hours.

Qualifications

GCSE in:

  • 2 Further Subjects (grade A*/9 to C*5)
  • English and Maths (grade A*/9 to C*5)
  • Science/Engineering subject (grade A*/9 to C*5)

Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Requirements

Due to the nature of this engineering discipline, a higher level of manual dexterity is required, as well as the requirement to use high magnification microscopes.

Alaris Linwave designs and manufactures advanced microwave and RF products by utilising our full range of design, manufacturing and testing capabilities in Lincoln. These products are used within the Aerospace, Defence and Medical Industries.

Upon the successful completion of the apprenticeship and dependant on the student’s performance during the apprenticeship, there may be higher education opportunities available e.g. HNC/HND in Electronics. Sponsored degree options may also be available to the right candidates. The successful completion of the apprenticeship can lead to Engineering opportunities either within the Production or Development Teams.
