Shift patterns can vary due to the operational needs of the business, this may include nights and/or weekends. Initially, shifts will typically be Monday to Friday, from 07:00 until 16:30.

What you'll do at work
You will be responsible for supporting the safe installation, maintenance and removal of temporary traffic management on highways and road networks, while developing the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to become a Lead Traffic Management Operative. Your hourly rate will increase as you progress through the training program.
The role is critical to ensuring the safety of road users, colleagues and the public, while maintaining compliance with current legislation, codes of practice and company procedures. The post holder will work towards increasing responsibility on site, including supporting the coordination of traffic management activities.
The purpose of your role will be to deliver Traffic Management solutions for our clients in line with Health and Safety regulations.
As part of your role, you may be required to:
- Assist in the installation, maintenance, monitoring and removal of temporary traffic management in accordance with approved drawings, permits and the Traffic Signs Manual (Chapter 8)
- Undertake depot and yard duties, including sign manufacturing, equipment repairs and maintenance, stock checks, vehicle loading and unloading, and preparing traffic management equipment for operational deployment
- Carry out traffic management activities safely and efficiently on all types of road networks, including local roads and high-speed carriageways (where trained)
- Undertake on-site and dynamic risk assessments with support, implementing control measures as required
- Ensure traffic management equipment is positioned, maintained and removed safely and in line with company standards
- Comply with all health, safety, environmental and quality (SHEQ) requirements, reporting incidents, near misses and unsafe conditions
- Work collaboratively with supervisors, planners and clients to deliver works to programme and specification
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping on site, ensuring the work area remains safe and tidy at all times
- Represent the company professionally when dealing with clients, road users and members of the public
- Participate in training, briefings and toolbox talks to develop competence and awareness
- Support the Lead Operative in coordinating on-site activities and develop skills to lead small teams as experience increases

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Comply with health and safety regulations.
- Follows safe systems of work including carrying out static and dynamic risk assessments.
- Carry out operator maintenance and minor repair, checks and configuration requirements to TTM vehicles within limits of responsibility, escalating defects. For example: impact protection vehicle (IPV), traffic management installation vehicle, traffic management maintenance vehicle, traffic management airlock or closure point vehicle or traffic management convoy vehicle.
- Carry out operator maintenance and minor repair, checks and configuration requirements to TTM plant within limits of responsibility, escalating defects. For example: mobile lane closure signs & trailers, temporary traffic light units, ROBO stop and go signs, portable variable message signs or portable tower lights.
- Move, handle and store TTM equipment and systems.
- Load, unload and secure TTM equipment and systems to and from vehicles or plant.
- Select and use TTM PPE.
- Interpret traffic management layouts, design and technical specifications.
- Select and prepare TTM equipment and systems.
- Plan for and organise installation.
- Inspect, maintain, repair and replace TTM equipment and systems.
- Operate and guide plant and vehicles to create safe working zones within limits of responsibility.
- Install, position, secure and remove TTM equipment and systems tailored to the road type, without disadvantaging those with mobility and sensory impairment.
- Apply digital TTM technologies to a TTM system. For example, incursion warning systems, automated traffic signal controls, variable message signs or tablet-based work management systems.
- Respond to and contain emergencies including traffic accidents and vulnerable persons in crisis and seek support of formal responders.
- Restore the carriageway to a safe condition.
- Comply with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards and guidance. Segregate resources for reuse, recycling and disposal.
- Communicate with others verbally: internal and external customers, colleagues and managers.
- Complete task documentation, paper-based or digital.
- Applies team working principles.
