Job Opportunity at Hawkscroft Ltd

Hawkscroft Ltd have an excellent opportunity for the right candidate to join their experienced team of Installers, gaining a Level 2 apprenticeship as a Fenestration Installer. The successful candidate will be mentored by an experienced team who will support the successful candidate in becoming fully skilled & qualified in this industry.

On a Day-to-Day Basis as an Apprentice

  • Learn how to carefully remove old and historic windows, and install new or refurbished windows and doors
  • Learn how to handle glass and undertake glazing, including silicone facing
  • Use a variety of specialized tools to undertake all the projects, including manual and power tools
  • Helping and assisting with skilled tasks, and going on to learn these skills
  • Keeping tools in order, site, and workshop tidiness & cleanliness
  • Loading, unloading, and general manual tasks
  • Site health and safety rules and regulations
  • As an apprentice working in and around properties, you will need to have good customer service skills and a polite outlook

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

Apprenticeship Details

Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

Course Contents

  • Comply with Health and Safety regulations, standards and guidance.
  • Identify and use personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Comply with industry regulations, standards and guidance.
  • Read, interpret, review risk assessments, implement control measures.
  • Use traditional or digital written methods to communicate with others.
  • Communicate with others verbally for example, colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Plan order of works, carry out pre-installation checks.
  • Prepare and maintain a safe working area.
  • Select, check and use hand and power tools and equipment.
  • Move, handle and store materials, including loading and unloading of vehicles.
  • Identify, install and remove temporary support requirements.
  • Remove existing fenestration products.
  • Comply with environmental and sustainability regulations, standards, and guidance, recycling and disposal.
  • Read and interpret information from manufacturers guidance and other sources, for example from drawings, specifications, digital documents or work instructions.
  • Prepare the frame for installation for example handles, hinges, locks, hardware, trickle vents or frame extensions.
  • Position and fix the frame in the opening ensuring level, plumb and square.
  • Position and install sashes.
  • Position and install, glazing and any infill materials into the frame.
  • Measure, cut, drill and fix trims.
  • Apply external seals for moisture and air penetration. For example, wet sealants, tapes, membranes and any associated products.
  • Interim inspection work and rectify or report any work that is incorrect or incomplete.
  • Complete final inspections and workplace documentation.
  • Complete a customer or site manager handover.
  • Check and use working at height equipment for example steps, ladders, hop-ups, and podiums.
  • Carry out and record planned and unplanned learning opportunities and development activities.
  • Carry out internal and external finishing for example making good any damage, priming, sealing, trimmings, mouldings, backer rod or foam, scribing, trimmings, flashings, perimeter pressings and cladding.
  • Prepare openings for installation.

All aspects of your training will be delivered on-site with your employer.

Training Delivery

  • As an apprentice you will receive from your employer a set number of hours per week for your off the job training, this included as part of your working weekly hours. Off the job training is there to help with your learning and development of the knowledge, skills and behaviors as part of your apprenticeship standard.
  • Majority of these hours will be spent on site with your mentor learning, along with having time set aside away from your normal day to day working environment for you to complete study time in which will help you with the completion of targets set by your assessor (e.g. workbooks, online learning, research, self-study).
  • You will also have regular site visits every ten to twelve weeks from your designated assessor, who will monitor your progress throughout your apprenticeship program.

At GFTS, we emphasize the importance of a ‘Train, Gain & Retain’ attitude to the learning and make every effort to deliver industry-recognised qualifications in an effective and bespoke manner. Although our industry speciality is in the delivery of Fenestration Training, our assessors are each skilled in their own specialist discipline.

This apprenticeship is a mentor led qualification based at site. As an apprentice you will learn all practical elements on site with your mentor which will help you develop your Skills and Behaviours as part of the apprenticeship standard.

  • There is no need for any college days, and no additional travel is required.
  • Our assessors are able to carry out classroom sessions, observations or site visits every 10-12 weeks to support you through the knowledge elements of the standard in small segments throughout the duration of the apprenticeship, in preparation for End Point Assessment (EPA).
  • Everything for your apprenticeship will need to be completed within your working weekly hours each week in which you will spend a set number of hours per a week learning and studying towards your apprenticeship.

Requirements

  • GCSE in: Maths & English (grade A*- C / 9 - 4)
  • Share if you have other relevant qualifications and industry experience. The apprenticeship can be adjusted to reflect what you already know.

Please be aware that we work outside as well as inside on our jobs as they demand, as such, you may be required to work in a variety of weather conditions. The work also requires reasonable levels of physical fitness, so please consider this before applying. Some early starts may also be needed when working farther afield.
