A Forklift Truck Service Engineer Apprenticeship
About the Role
A forklift truck service engineer has a real responsibility, working on their own initiative to diagnose and solve problems. You are the person the customer relies upon to get their business back up and running. Good engineers are in high demand, and this demand will only increase over the years.
This is a secure, long-term career opportunity in an industry and company built to last.
As a workshop engineer, your primary responsibilities will include:
- Servicing and repairing forklifts
- Training in all aspects of service engineering, including working with:
- Hydraulics
- LPG systems
- Electric systems
- Identifying problems and applying daily diagnostic skills to resolve them efficiently
- Installing, repairing, and performing planned maintenance on customer forklift trucks according to Crown specifications

During the apprenticeship, you will:

Complete set engineering modules on time and attend required college courses
-
Work shadow colleagues and develop an understanding of workshop procedures through on-the-job training

Attend manufacturers’ training and other relevant courses

Learn Crown administrative procedures, including:
- Completing worksheets
- Handling timesheets
-
Assist in ensuring customer trucks are kept secure and clean while in the workshop
-
Adhere to Crown Company policies, legislation, and Health and Safety procedures
-
Under close supervision, ensure all work meets industry and Crown standards
-
Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, colleagues, and managers
-
Undertake any additional duties Crown may reasonably require
Person Specification
Essential Skills
- Willingness to learn and ability to follow instructions
- A keen interest in engineering
- Friendly demeanour and ability to build strong relationships with colleagues and customers
- A-C grades or equivalent* in Maths and English as a minimum
- Proficiency in I.T. with familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, or equivalent software
- Ability to work efficiently and accurately
- Highly motivated
- Strong ability to work as part of a team, along with excellent:
- Interpersonal skills
- Communication skills
- Literacy skills
- Capacity to work with efficiency, accuracy, and meet deadlines
- Ability to prioritise workload and work independently
- Flexibility, dependability, and adaptability
- Aptitude for practical science or engineering skills

Desirable Skills
- No prior experience required, though a demonstrable interest in mechanical engineering through schoolwork or hobby interests is highly beneficial
Vacancy Details
- Hours of Work: Monday to Friday – 8 hours per day
- Holidays: 25 days holiday (not inclusive of bank holidays)
