As a Heavy Vehicle Service and Maintenance Technician Apprentice, you will contribute significantly to the maintenance, servicing, repair, and inspection of the council’s fleet of diverse vehicles and equipment.
Working alongside experienced mechanics, you’ll help ensure that council vehicles—alongside those from partner organisations and external customers—remain in optimal condition, tested to high standards, and delivered in a timely and efficient manner. Your role is crucial in maintaining essential services safely, reliably, and effectively.
This is an exciting opportunity to gain practical experience in a dynamic workshop environment, develop key technical skills, and grow within a supportive and professional team.

- Work closely with qualified mechanics to perform mechanical and electrical inspections, as well as maintenance and repair across a wide range of council vehicles.
- Learn how to prepare vehicles for MOT testing, including identifying defects, completing necessary repairs, and conducting routine servicing and inspections.
- Gain hands-on experience working with larger and more complex vehicles and equipment, including:
- 26-tonne gritters
- Tankers
- Buses
- Tippers
- Vans
- Cars
- Plant machinery

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
