Approved Mental Health Professional

Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) – Permanent & Part-Time Opportunities

Location: Hexagon Tower, Blackley, Manchester (onsite) Contract Type: Permanent (6x 35-hour weeks), Part-Time (1x 17.5-hour week)

About the Role

Manchester City Council is seeking passionate, experienced Mental Health Professionals to join their evolving 24/7 Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) service. This opportunity allows practitioners to shape a responsive, trauma-informed mental health system while delivering high-quality care in crisis situations.

Key Objectives:

  • Support the development of a 24/7 AMHP model, blending traditional and out-of-hours provision.
  • Drive innovation in urgent & emergency care, including A&E mental health responses and Section 13 training.
  • Uphold solution-focused and relational practice, ensuring person-centred care under the Mental Health Act.
  • Contribute to system change by embedding co-production and strengths-based approaches.

This role is ideal for Social Workers, Mental Health Nurses, Occupational Therapists or Psychologists who want to influence policy, challenge barriers, and create lasting impact in Manchester’s mental health landscape.


Working Hours & Contract

  • Main Role: 6 x 35-hour weeks (Permanent)
  • Additional Support Role: 1 x 17.5-hour week (Part-Time)
  • Hours: Includes late shifts/twilight hours and extended days (fluctuating based on shift patterns).
  • Onsite Location: Hexagon Tower, Blackley, Manchester

Additional Benefits:

Role Requirements

Job-Specific Criteria (Mandatory)

  • Professional Registration:
    • Registered Social Worker, Occupational Therapist, Nurse, or Psychologist with the relevant UK body (e.g., Social Work England, HCPC, or NMC).
  • AMHP Qualification & Approval:
    • Approved Mental Health Professional qualification (or required to gain approval within an agreed timeframe).
  • Legal Knowledge & Skills:
    • Strong understanding of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, and Care Act.
    • Demonstrated experience in assessing and managing complex mental health risks in acute/crisis settings.
  • Autonomy & Decision-Making:
    • Proven ability to work independently and make defensible, ethical decisions under pressure.
  • Collaboration & Advocacy:
    • Experience working across multi-agency teams, including judicial and voluntary sector involvement.
  • Person-Centred Practice:
    • Commitment to anti-discriminatory, strengths-based, and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Flexibility:
    • Willingness to embrace unconventional hours (evenings, weekends, and extended shifts).

Desirable Experience

  • AMHP or out-of-hours support/mentoring in mental health practice.
  • Experience with Greater Manchester-wide systems (preferred), or broader systemic reform.
  • Additional training in safeguarding, deprivation of liberty (DoLS), or trauma-informed care.
  • Interest in service development or shaping 24/7 models (referenced in this role).

Requirements & Documentation

Legal & Security Clearance

✔ UK Right to Work: Proof of eligibility is required before commencement (visa sponsorship not available). ✔ DBS Check: Enhanced disclosure (exceptions under Rehabilitation of Offenders Act apply). ✔ References: Three years’ employment history (minimum two references required).

Driving & Logistics

✔ Mandatory: Full valid driving licence (you must provide your own vehicle). ✔ Covered by: Essential Car User Allowance (detailed in contract).
