Residential Worker – Probation Service (Approved Premises)

Based at:

  • NPS 100-108 Norfolk Park Road, Sheffield, S2 2RU
  • NPS 38-42 Christ Church Road, Doncaster, DN1 2QL
  • NPS Doncaster Road, Rotherham, S65 1NN

About the Role

Core Responsibilities

The Residential Worker will operate within 24-hour Approved Premises (APs) providing 24-hour live-in supervision and care for offenders reintegrating into the community. Key duties include:

  • Supporting high-risk offenders on licence supervision at approved residential sites.
  • Ensuring daily safety, security, and welfare of residents and premises.
  • Monitoring adherence to sentence conditions and risk management plans.
  • Collaborating with probation teams to report potential reoffending or safety concerns.
  • Assisting with behavioural intervention, personal development, and reintegration activities.
  • Maintaining security and compliance with operational policies.

The role is core to public protection and requires a proactive approach to risk assessment, mentoring, and compliance enforcement.

Key Working Arrangements

  • All shifts on-site – No hybrid or homeworking permitted.
  • Shift pattern: 24/7 rollover rota (inclusive of weekend, night shifts (waking duties) and all bank holidays).
  • Annualised hours with flexibility within business needs – submit 3-month shift availability to your line manager (must include a balanced mix of unsocial hours).
  • Mobile grade role – may be required to work at multiple sites as needed, in accordance with policy.

Key Conditions

  • Starting salary: £28,064
  • Unsocial shift premium payments
    • Weekday nights (7:00 pm – 8:00 am) → 30% premium
    • Weekends (8:00 am Saturday – 8:00 am Monday) + Bank Holidays (8:00 am – 8:00 am) → 50% premium
    • Time off in lieu for all hours worked on public/bank holidays.

About You – Key Requirements

Person Specification

  • No degree required – personal qualities and experience are prioritised.
  • Essential skills:
    • Empathy, patience, and resilience when dealing with complex rehabilitation cases.
    • Clear communication skills for report-writing.
    • Compassionate yet firm resolution in supervisory roles.
  • Desirable Experience (not essential but highly regarded):
    • Experience with vulnerable or rehabilitating populations (e.g., care, social work, leisure).
    • Teamworking skills (this is a 24-hour team role).
