Residential Worker (Approved Premises) – NHS Probation Services (NPS), Midlands

Locations

NPS 85 Stonnall Road, Walsall WS9 8JZ Jackie Harriet House, Birmingham B6 6AJ

Note: Merit Lists may be utilised for other approved premises sites in the Midlands region and alternative working patterns not currently advertised.


Job Summary

Current vacancies at Stonnall Road cater to various working patterns:

  • Annualised hours (625 or 1,250 per year) – comprising 1 to 2 12-hour shifts weekly with unsocial hours included
  • Full-time peripatetic roles requiring reasonable travel across clustered sites
  • Full/part-time Fixed Position allocations at single Approved Premises

Important: Responsibilities do not overlap with band 3 roles such as Probation Service Officers (PSOs). Only apply if you can demonstrate flexibility to cover any Approved Premises outlined and their respective patterns.


Role Overview

The post provides 24-hour cover across one or multiple Approved Premises (APs) with core duties of security, monitoring, and o supporting offenders requiring supervised residency.

Key Objectives:

  • Ensure the health, safety, and orderly conduct of all residents, in line with court orders, licence conditions, and AP rules.
  • Monitor risk escalation by clearly reporting behavioural changes or non-compliance to enforcement protocols.
  • Assist Offender Managers in addressing high-risk or disruptive behaviours while fostering pro-social engagement.
  • Uphold Health and Safety standards, conduct periodic inspections, and manage incident responses proactively.

The role mandates adherence to examination of specific policies regarding sensitive/confidential information handling.


Core Responsibilities

Supervision & Engagement

  • Actively observe, interact with and engage residents in a pro-social manner.
  • Enliven purposeful activities aligned to sentence plan objectives as delegated by AP Managers and Offender Managers.
  • Supervise safety and adherence to house rules, licences, and curfews, including:
    • Securing premises over night hours
    • Confirming resident visibility and welfare during overnight shifts.

Security & Administration

  • Carry out periodic patrols, medical checks and night-time inspections (including cellars and external grounds).
  • Monitor relatives and contractual service providers, collating data on incidents, missing/at-risk IID-tagged items, and property tourism.
  • Maintain First Aid readiness in the event of resident injuries or self-harming behaviour.

Risk Management & Reporting

  • Detect and document deviations from risk assessments, liaising with external professionals (e.g., Police, Healthcare).
  • Deploy medication matrices, manage medication distribution, and perform drug and alcohol testing upon reasonable suspicion.
  • Undertake room searches if justified by assessment of non-compliance.
  • Accurately log appellate/incident reports for both internal reviews and regulatory satisfaction.

Safeguarding & Compliance

  • Implement mandatory standby, emergency procedures, and do-not-enter interventions.
  • Facilitate initial resident application and join-on intake, alongside holistic assessments adhering to safeguarding policies.
  • Where relevant, use Previously Recorded Material (PRM) for training and feedback.

Behavioural Competencies

Assessment during recruitment will evaluate these essential skills:

  • Effective communication with colleagues, risk professionals, and trustees, including clarity at changeovers and positive engagement with HTT data capture.
  • Collaborative teamwork to uphold policy compliance and maintain consistency in emergency actions.
  • Pro-active decision-making under observational pressures, integrating updates from other sources on a shift.
  • Resilience during unsociable hours and unplanned work variations.

Experience & Requirements

Eligibility Criteria

  • Language Proficiency: Fluency in English (Welsh preferred in Welsh sites) for all spoken tasks.
  • Education: At least 5 GCSEs (Grade 4 or above) covering Maths/English, or equivalent qualifications with demonstrated competencies to read/write policy documents and submit reports to internal/ external stakeholders.
    • Equivalent non-classroom qualifications should be checked against OFQUAL.
  • IT Skills: Proficiency with standard packages:
    • Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
    • Database entry on Access and other case note management technologies

Person Specification

  • Extensive experience engaging with those experience social/personal crises (past offender work advantageous).
  • Understand how domestic difficulties impact adherence to authorised plans.
  • Correspond good with pro-social behavioral goal-setting tied to individual offending patterns.
  • Ability to vibration stranger grief or high risk confrontation with clear documentation.

Lacks RNIB pairing of logged observations, reporting needs flexibility, and also applies with responsibility scrutiny within extended HR framework.

Working Patterns & Allowances

  • Core Hours/System: Standard or full-time posts also cover split shifts and merited shifts. Inform is 37 standard hours (unsocial hours allowances = £2.93 per hour), offshore charge is appropriate.
  • Travel Provisions: Peripatetic Frequency Way Reconstitution expenses plus 24-hour referral when necessary.
  • Regular Requirements – Individual agreements through NPS Country County Redeployments displaces, intersectionally stratified workplace restrictions particularly ensure hostel check recommendations.

Security Considerations

Successful applicants must complete mandatory security checks, including:

  • Enhanced DBS Security Tier 1 Brian Tissue Vetting (SC-4).
