We deliver innovative, practical, and sustainable solutions across the education, commercial, and residential sectors, supporting projects from concept through to completion.
We are currently seeking an Architect to join our Architecture and Design team based in Braintree. This role offers an excellent opportunity for an Architect looking to develop their career within a collaborative, technically strong, and supportive consultancy environment.
The Role
As an Architect at Barker Associates, you will be responsible for projects across RIBA Stages 0–7, working closely with clients and internal multi-disciplinary teams. You will take ownership of allocated projects, with appropriate autonomy and responsibility, supported by senior colleagues and clear opportunities for career progression.
Key Areas Of Responsibilities Will Include
- Lead the day-to-day architectural delivery of small to medium-sized projects across education, commercial, and residential sectors.
- Act as the primary architectural point of contact for allocated projects, liaising directly with clients, consultants, contractors, and internal teams.
- Develop, coordinate, and deliver design proposals from concept through technical design, ensuring alignment with client briefs, statutory requirements, and agreed programs.
- Produce and oversee high-quality technical drawings, specifications, and schedules for planning, building regulations, tender, and construction stages.
- Coordinate architectural information with structural, civil, MEP, sustainability, and surveying disciplines to ensure integrated project delivery.
- Prepare and manage statutory submissions, including planning applications and building regulation packages.
- Support procurement and construction activities, including preparation of tender documentation, responding to contractor queries, RFIs, and attending site inspections.
- Attend and contribute to client meetings, design team meetings, planning consultations, and site meetings.
- Apply sound technical judgment to ensure compliance with current Building Regulations, British Standards, and industry best practice.
- Manage workload effectively to meet agreed quality, fee, and program targets, identifying and escalating risks where appropriate.
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring support to junior team members and contribute to internal design reviews and quality assurance processes.
- Actively engage with sustainability and low-carbon design principles in line with Barker Associates’ commitment to responsible development.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
