Kick-start your career in architecture with our Level 6 Architectural Assistant Apprenticeship
You'll gain hands-on experience on live projects, work alongside experienced architects, and earn while you learn towards a recognised qualification in a supportive and collaborative practice.
What you'll do at work
- Feasibility studies (CAD drawings)
- Planning drawings and planning documents (AutoCAD, ArchiCAD, Microsoft office)
- Internal design drawings
- Technical drawings and specifications
- Planning policy research relevant to individual projects
- Technical and product research relevant to individual projects
- Site measurement and existing building survey drawings and analysis
- General administration and assist with project management
Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training. You’ll study to gain professional knowledge and skills.

What you'll learn
Course contents
- Generate architectural design proposals of diverse scales and type, including conducting feasibility studies
- Draft and edit drawings and 3D models (plans, sections, elevations, and details) using relevant software, including CAD, to enable co-ordination with other professional’s input
- Produce and coordinate design information with the design team (e.g. engineering, landscaping and interior design)
- Critically analyse architectural culture, theory and design to present a personal viewpoint within a structured argument
- Creatively apply theories, practices and technologies of the arts that influence architectural design
- Produce necessary drawings and documents that comply with national and local planning policy
- Identify user needs and the local context in which the project is developed
- Develop the design of projects of varying scales in respect of environmental context and sustainability
- Deliver services under the supervision of an Architect or a project leader, prioritising the interests of the client and other stakeholders
- Problem solve and use professional judgement to take initiative and make appropriate contributions to decision making
- Research and investigate relevant information (e.g. site analysis, previous architectural projects) to support project development to ensure all client and regulatory requirements are met
- Investigate, critically appraise and select alternative structural, constructional and material systems relevant to architectural design
- Integrate structural, construction and engineering strategies with the overall design
- Support an Architect or a project leader with construction inspections to ensure projects are built in accordance with contractual drawings
- Evaluate materials, processes and techniques that apply to architectural designs and building construction, and where practicable integrate alternative materials, processes and techniques into design proposals
- Apply different technological methods to building design to provide conditions of comfort and protection against the environment
- Meet client’s brief within the constraints of the imposed budget limitations
- Meet client’s brief within the constraints of the building regulations
- Interact with statutory authorities or individuals to support delivery of projects in a wide variety of sectors and within diverse legislative frameworks

Training schedule
The apprentice will receive structured workplace training aligned with the Level 6 Architectural Assistant Apprenticeship Standard
- They will work in practice alongside experienced architects on live projects, receive regular mentoring and progress reviews, complete off-the-job training, and develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to achieve the apprenticeship and progress towards professional practice

The apprentice will complete the Level 6 Architectural Assistant Apprenticeship through a combination of workplace learning and day-release study at the University of Portsmouth

Householder residential projects involve reconfiguring of internal layouts, extensions of all sizes, through to custom new build houses.
We provide a full and comprehensive service covering all our clients’ needs and strive to make the process as simple and effective as possible. Planning advice is a vital part of this process, which we incorporate from the beginning of a project.
We aim to be a client’s sole point of contact throughout the design and planning processes, liaising with surveyors, consultants, and local authorities on their behalf. This assists in clearer communication and coordination between those involved in the various aspects of a project. In addition, this removes the need for the client to be involved in the complicated and time consuming aspects of the process. Allowing the client to concentrate on what they are to achieve through the process and their lives in general.
Based in Liphook on the Hampshire, Surrey, West Sussex border, we undertake projects in the surrounding areas and further afield, covering a wide range of planning authorities.

On successful completion of the apprenticeship, the apprentice may be offered the opportunity to progress into the next stage of training to be an Architectural Assistant (Part 2) within the practice, subject to performance and business needs
They will be supported to continue gaining professional experience and work towards registration as an architect
