Area Controller Maintenance – Fixed Term Contract (12 Months)

Location: London Heathrow, UK Contract Type: Fixed Term – 12 Months Reports To: UK Technical Operations Manager


About the Role

Operational role based at London Heathrow, focusing on the recovery, input, and output of Out of Service (OOS) assets across Relocation (RAC), Technical Network Control (TNC), and 24/7 Recovery for all Hertz Fleet OOS assets.

As Area Controller Maintenance, you will be responsible for ensuring the most efficient, cost-effective, and quality-driven recovery and repair of Hertz vehicles—including body damage input/output, maintenance repairs, RTA recovery, and wreck processing.


Key Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities

  • Manage all damage inputs/outputs for Fleet Maintenance and Body Damage (BD), including:
    • RTA recovery workflows
    • Ticket opening & asset allocation for repairs
    • Vehicle efficiency & reduction of Vehicle Out-Of-Service (VOR) metrics
  • Oversee supply chain procedures to minimise repair costs while adhering to contracted Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
  • Contribute to wreck management, handling title administration, documentation, and disposal in line with cost-saving goals.
  • Financial recoveryen for:
    • Spend forecasting for asset recovery
    • Processing Purchase Orders (POs) and returns for repairs
    • First Notice of Loss (FNOL) recovery requests
  • Report and influence on:
    • Vehicle downtime strategies (reducing Nor-Rev days).
    • Supplier performance, monitoring pull-down times, key KPIs, and repair accuracy.
    • Supplier budgets and cost efficiencies in conjunction with Rental, Technical, and Network Teams.

Operational Accountabilities

  • Multisystem management:
    • Use of Audatex, 1Fleet, Strada, MARS for damage and maintenance workflows.
    • Financial tracking via Oracle and Microsoft 365.
  • Collaborate across functions to optimise the end-to-end recovery and repair process.
  • Lead process improvement initiatives for frontline operations by identifying training needs.
  • Drive continuous improvements to standard operating procedures, ensuring compliance with company metrics.

Required Qualifications & Experience

Education & Technical Proficiency

  • Qualifications in Mechanical Engineering or Automotive Repair:
    • MEng/MSc Certificate in Mechanical Engineering, or IMechE Membership, or BTEC Level 2+ Accreditation in automotive repairs.
    • Body Estimator (Accredited – Thatcham Recommended, IHVMAC, or similar).
  • Software Experience:
    • Expert proficiency:
      • Audatex, Microsoft 365 (Excel, Word, Teams), Oracle (Cost Management)
    • Moderate experience:
      • **Auto Data, Thatcham claims process, Epix (1link), AI Wreck Management Tools

Skills & Interpersonal Attributes

  • Stakeholder Management: Ability to negotiate with body shops, recovery firms, legal/litigation representatives, dealers & contractual suppliers.
  • Technical & Commercial Collaboration: Engage with Engineering Teams, Telematics, Fleet Supply Chain e.g. Oderfix, Azuga, Global Service Suppliers (Texaco, Esso, Shell).
  • Analysis & Decision-Making: Tailor workflows to reduce costs under warranty but ensure profitability.
  • Adaptability & Ambiguity Tolerance: Ability to navigate complex, constantly evolving processes involving third-party vendors and in-house teams.
  • Change Driver: Ability to cascade standardisation throughout operations teams.

Business Behaviours

  • Organisational Excellence: Self-managing with clear time-project-scheduling prioritisation.
  • Ongoing improvements: Coach teams on new systems or higher performance standards.
  • Results-Driven: Responsible for woafs - in-house targets for BD (Body Damage) efficiencies, average repair costs, and wreck provisions.
  • Commercial Acumen: Monitor cost drivers and suggest regions for investment or partnerships to scalability and reduce reimbursement rates.

Performance Metrics &Targets

Monitor and optimise 12+ KPIs, including:

  • 1. Body Damage OOS knowledge as percentage of fleet
  • 2. Engineering OOS percentage of fleet
  • 3. Average repair cost per vehicle
  • 4. Non-Revenue Vehicles in recovery for 7+ days
  • 5. Wreck disposal frequency
  • 6. Trial Litigation Recovery Efficacy
