Area Ecologist (full title: Area Ecologist – Marches, PB6)

What You’ll Do

This vital role plays a critical part in achieving Forestry England’s vision: "To ensure England’s forests are the best places for wildlife to thrive."

Key Responsibilities

Your work will centre on ecological advisory services and monitoring, ensuring:

  • Operational teams manage species, habitats, and protected sites per legislation, policy, and best practice.
  • Habitats and species are actively monitored across a range of areas.
  • Supporting planning and recreation teams in data-driven decision-making.

Specific Duties

  • Provide expert ecological advice and advocacy.
  • Conduct habitat and species monitoring to support resource management.
  • Work with district stakeholders to uphold biodiversity goals.
  • Contribute towards consultation, reporting, and public engagement.
  • Engage with broader teams for collaborative policy and operational planning.

(Reporting line: District Ecologist.)

Requirements

** Preferred Qualifications/Education**

  • A relevant degree (BSc/MSci or similar) in ecology, nature conservation, environmental science, or equivalent qualification.
  • Knowledge of UK ecological legislation (e.g. Habitats Directive, UK Biodiversity Action Plans).

Experience/Acquired Skills

Essential Criteria

  • Practical experience in habitat management, field monitoring, and biodiversity assessment.
  • Fieldwork ability, strong understanding of recording methodologies and survey techniques.
  • Familiarity with natural environment policies, software tools (e.g., GBIF, iRecord, BSBI), and GIS.
  • Record of working collaboratively with stakeholders in conservation, land management, and planning.

Desirables

  • Experience with ** деревья-декоративные and forest public engagement initiatives**.
  • Knowledge of Advised treatments, proponents or implementation of conservation projects.
  • Familiarity with Water Framework Directive or biodiversity net gain goals.
