About the Role
Help us create a better—and quicker—future by leading a team of professional Transmission design engineers. As Area Manager for Main Plant Design, you’ll:
- Develop, assess and deliver complex detailed engineering designs
- Balance innovation and value-driven engineering to minimise asset lifecycle costs
- Influence investment planning decisions for the Transmission capital project programme
- Support the UK’s Net Zero Emission Targets
Your focus will be on driving high-value projects with a total expenditure (Totex) of £200m–£500m+ per annum by 2027 in the Central Region.
Key Responsibilities
Project & Team Leadership
- Leadership & Deliverables: Ensure Main Plant Engineering deliverables in the Central region adhere to scheduled timelines and meet SPT Standards & Policies.
- Team Management: Oversee Design Leads, Lead Engineers, and other direct reports.
- Programme Coordination: Collaborate with multi-regional teams to achieve cohesive project outcomes.
Design & Standardisation
- Deliver cost-effective end-to-end design solutions for Central transmission projects while complying with regulatory and financial allowances.
- Drive standardised design solutions to enhance efficiency and consistency across the SPT business.

Compliance & Safety
- Ensure compliance with HSEQ (Health, Safety, Environment & Quality) policies, CDM regulations, and all engineering standards.
Talent Development
- Provide training, coaching, and mentoring to enhance the skills and expertise of the team.
- Implement performance management practices for professional engineers.
Key Requirements
Technical & Leadership Experience
- Proven Main Plant design experience in the UK for major transmission infrastructure projects (demonstrable, hands-on role preferred).
- Experience leading multi-disciplinary engineering teams or managing centralised design operations.
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline; Chartered Engineer status (or pursuit) highly valued.
- Strong technical and change management skills.
Stakeholder & Communication Skills
- Ability to build engagement with stakeholders at all levels, including internal teams and external partners.
- Experience in BIM (Building Information Modelling) for transmission substation design.
Sustainability & Innovation
- Persuasion as a Net Zero companies’ enabler, with a track record of implementing low-carbon engineering solutions.
- Strategic thinking for efficient and sustainable project delivery.
