Description

We are seeking to recruit a Technician to work with the Art & Design team at our Medway Campus. The role will require you to work with the lecturing staff to ensure resources are in place, and studios are well managed. You will be expected to have a sound knowledge of the requirements of a creative arts department providing an ability to manage the resourcing and ordering of all equipment and materials.

The role requires you to contribute to teaching and learning, providing students with demonstrations on the safe and creative use of equipment and materials, and support as required with practical tasks both during lesson times, and when learners are working independently.

The role requires you to monitor and exercise good and safe workshop practice in compliance with Health and Safety regulations and legislation, taking responsibility for the safe management of materials, chemicals, tools, equipment and instrumentation within the studio environments, to ensure the delivery of high-quality practical sessions which fully comply with relevant Health and Safety legislation and best practice.

The successful candidate will work as part of a team to support the department in meeting the College’s objectives and targets set out in the strategic plan, supporting teaching staff in the preparation and execution of appropriate practical teaching sessions, ensuring the reliable and timely availability of materials and equipment.

This role is 37 hours a week 40 weeks per year.

Main Responsibilities and Duties

The following outlines the key duties expected of this role as directed by the Executive Director or relevant Director. It is not an exhaustive list but represents the primary responsibilities:

  • Supervise and train students during practical sessions, including monitoring, recording and reporting students’ completion of H&S inductions. This includes monitoring and registering the attendance of students in workshop/ practical sessions and assessments.
  • Exercise good and safe workshop practice in compliance with Health and Safety regulations and legislation and to maintain a safe, clean and tidy learning environment. This will include providing first aid as and when required.
  • Take responsibility for the safe management of materials, chemicals, tools, equipment and instrumentation according to the levels of associated risk during the ordering, storage, use and disposal process with reference to COSHH Regulations and other relevant H&S legislation.
  • Update risk assessments for specific studio use and processes.
  • Deal with materials, tools and equipment for workshop sessions including keeping a record of all materials used in order to effectively manage stock levels, ordering, unloading of delivered materials, preparation for sessions, issuing to students and monitoring its use, in compliance with H&S and COSHH regulations.
  • Meet regularly with lecturers, to understand the requirements of the provision.

In addition, all post holders will be required to be trained to act as Fire Marshals and First Aiders.
