- Salary: £35,000 to £42,000 (dependent on experience)
- Contract: 12-month Fixed-Term Contract (Maternity Cover)
- Location: Hybrid (Home & London), with occasional meetings in Folkestone
Introduction
Saga Magazine is currently recruiting for an Art Editor to cover a 12-month maternity leave. This role will involve close collaboration with the newly appointed Creative Director and longstanding Editorial Director. Although temporary, this position offers invaluable experience working with top industry talent.
The role is pivotal in maintaining Saga’s high-quality design standards and immaculate brand style. You’ll act as a creative problem-solver, bringing innovative design solutions to editorial content while commissioning illustrations and managing compelling photo shoots. Must be passionate about current trends in photography, illustration, and digital channels.
Additionally, you’ll oversee the design and production of the magazine app, manage image assets for the website, and produce high-quality digital assets for multi-platform use.
Role Responsibilities
Core Duties:
- Produce engaging, high-quality magazine layouts and print design assets
- Adhere strictly to Saga’s creative style guide and brand design standards
- Design and release Saga’s monthly magazine app
- Collaborate with digital content editors on image usage
- Efficiently use an online flatplanning workflow system to keep production on schedule
- Manage strict deadlines with meticulous precision
- Maintain expertise in typography, grid systems, layout design, and colour theory
- Commission illustrators, stylists, and photographers for shoots
- Oversee page production from inception to delivery, including client amends and technical pre-press work
- Support marketing and commercial teams with design assets (e.g., subscription marketing, advertorial layouts)
- Guide the digital team on image selection, resizing, and optimisations
- Ensure designs align with readership engagement strategies

Ideal Candidate
You must thrive in this dynamic print-digital hybrid role with the following:
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Several years in consumer magazine design (print and digital)
- Ability to art-direct photosensitive, saliva, and other challenging commercial shoots
- Hands-on experience commissioning professional illustrators and photographers
- Strong grasp of digital design best practices
- Mastery of Adobe Creative Suite, especially Adobe InDesign (essential)
- Knowledge of photography, including basic retouching in Photoshop
- Understanding of illustration and style approaches
- Familiarity with online flatplanning systems
- Willingness to attend shoots and create behind-the-scenes content (photo/video)
