Aspiring English Teacher Program – Schools Direct/Unqualified Teacher Route
- Role: Aspiring English Teacher (Paid School Direct Scheme)
- Salary Band: £24,066–£36,718 annually (paid on UQT scale starting at £24,066)
- Contract Type: Permanent, Full-Time (Term-Time Only)
- Start Date: September 2026
- Location: Stevenage, Secondary School in a rapidly improving Trust (London/Hertfordshire network)
- Training: PGCE included (optional opt-out) with dedicated one training day per week
- Qualification Pathway: Qualify for QTS via this route
About the Role
This is a unique "Earn while you teach & learn" opportunity for graduates looking to join the profession without first completing a PGCE. The scheme combines paid employment with professional development under expert supervision, ensuring seamless entry into teaching without rely on university training costs.
You will be:
- Employed directly by a school (no agency costs or uncertainty)
- Teaching at one school only (consistency with teaching styles)
- Starting with 15 lessons/week, increasing to 20
- Supporting KS3–KS4 English, including GCSE & A Level interventions and improving attainment
- Fostering a positive learning environment with routine and high behavioural standards

Key Responsibilities
- Teach KS3–KS4 English, preparing students for exams where applicable
- Deliver a knowledge-rich curriculum aligned with high expectations
- Develop strong behaviour management skills in line with school values
- Participate in evaluated teaching practice, including observations and feedback
- Apply for QTS through the scheme (PGCE enrolment optional)
- Engage proactively with departmental goals to raise attainment
Person Specification
- Degree Requirement: Must hold a UK degree in one of the following (or transferrable related fields): English English Literature English Language English Language & Literature English Studies Creative Writing Education Studies & English Applied Linguistics (Full list above—prioritises subject knowledge)
- Academic Standards: Strong A Levels & GCSEs (e.g., preferably C/4 or above in Maths/English)
- Practical Skills: Proven ability to engage and motivate students, apply English Knowledge (GCSE + A Level curriculum)
- Commitment: Demonstrated teacher readiness through enthusiasm, ambition, and resilience
