Asset Performance Specialist, Asset Management (Generation & Trading)

ESB is seeking an Asset Performance Specialist within Asset Management, Generation, and Trading. The successful candidate will drive the implementation of operational and maintenance standards to maximise portfolio performance, set performance targets, and conduct ongoing monitoring and analysis across our asset base.

The role will ensure alignment between operational processes, business requirements, and stakeholders to embed effective Asset Management practices in Generation & Trading.


Key Responsibilities

  • Data Analysis & Performance Tracking

    • Analyse operational data to identify factors impacting plant and commercial performance and liaise with all generation locations on performance issues.
    • Review and interpret variable O&M costs (start-up, running, etc.) for unit-level economic analysis.
  • Performance & Targeting Process

    • Prepare performance briefs and targets for each location as part of the Long-Term Action Plans (LTAPs) process.
    • Develop, review, and update unit Technical Offer Data.
  • Trading & Outage Coordination

    • Collaborate with ESB Trading on outage planning and plant performance optimisation.
    • Lead portfolio outage coordination, tracking, and reporting.
  • Grid & Commercial Compliance

    • Analyse grid code charges and penalties for strategic decision-making.
  • Reporting & Stakeholder Engagement

    • Prepare plant/portfolio performance reports for submission to:
      • Senior Management Team (SMT)
      • Station Managers
      • Wider stakeholders
    • Conduct station non-availability reviews, setting operational and commercial targets.
    • Monitor and report on station/portfolio targets to relevant parties.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration

    • Work closely with:
      • Asset Performance Management team
      • ESB Trading
      • Regulation & EMP (Engineering & Maintenance Planning)

  • Additional Tasks
    • Support Process & Performance Manager on ad-hoc tasks as required.

Essential Experience & Qualifications

  • Minimum 4–5 years of technical/operational experience in plant management, preferably in:
    • Power plants (thermal/renewable)
    • Heavy industry (focus on operations & maintenance)
  • Track record of delivering measurable business outcomes.
  • Strong stakeholder engagement & leadership skills.
  • Competent in GB Electricity Markets and the Intraday Settlement & Execution Mechanism (ISEM).
  • Data-driven thinking with:
    • Advanced Excel proficiency (manipulation of large datasets, functions like XLOOKUP, PivotTables, etc.).
    • Experience with big data systems/tools for portfolio analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Meet strict deadlines.
    • Prioritise multiple responsibilities.
    • Apply commercial acumen to asset performance tasks.

Essential Qualifications:

  • 3rd level degree in Engineering (or equivalent relevant experience).

Desirable Qualifications & Knowledge

  • Familiarity with specificity of ESB’s generating locations (thermal/renewable assets).
  • Knowledge of electrical generation technologies (mixed fleet operations).
  • Experience with data analytics tools beyond standard Excel.
  • Awareness of Grid Code requirements and their financial implications.

Location & Work Arrangement

  • Base location: ESB Head Office, 27 Lower Fitzwilliam Street Lower, Dublin 2.
  • Travel requirement: Expected due to site visits and operational coordination.
  • Flexible working: Hybrid model with:
    • Minimum 2 in-person working days per week at the office.
    • Remote work permitted for agreed tasks, subject to team/project needs.
  • Job jurisdiction: Applicants located in the Republic of Ireland/UK are eligible.
