Assistant Accountant
Assistant Accountant | Veolia
Salary: up to £38,000 dependent on experience, plus bonus and a range of Veolia benefits
Working Arrangement: 40 hours per week – hybrid model with a minimum of 3 days at our Wirral office (CH41 1EB)

Key Responsibilities
As an Assistant Accountant, you’ll play a critical support role in the Merseyside & Halton Finance Team, growing into a broader understanding of the end-to-end financial process.
Core Duties:
- Assist in timely and accurate financial reporting, reconciliations, and analysis to support decision-making.
- Work closely with the Financial Controller, Administrators, Operations Managers, and Finance teams to ensure:
- Compliance with financial policies and procedures.
- Accurate recording of transactions and robust financial controls.
- Prepare management accounts, including:
- Posting journals and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Reviewing risk areas and potential inaccuracies.
- Conduct financial analysis, tracking variances vs forecasts and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
- Support forecasting, budgeting, and long-term planning, utilising Workday, PowerBI, and Adaptive Planning.
- Assure compliance in audit processes, including helped with statutory accounts where applicable.
- Contribute to project-based work (investments, renewals, extensions).
- Provide financial insights on budgets, forecasts, and operational costs to local managers.
- Collect, organise, and analyse KPIs related to financial performance and operational growth initiatives.
- Manage your own workload in line with accounting timelines and ad-hoc requests.
- Handle monthly invoicing of materials sales while supporting Finance Admin queries when needed.

Essential Requirements
- Part-qualified or newly-qualified Accountant (with CIMA/ACCA/ACA or equivalent).
- Advanced Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets proficiency, including:
- Pivot Tables – data transformations & analysis.
- Advanced formulas – financial modelling capabilities.
- Strong Organisation & Self-Motivation – able to work independently under tight deadlines.
- Proactive mindset with exceptional problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Exceptional interpersonal abilities and confidence in stakeholder relations (working across disciplines).
- Hands-on experience with accounting systems.
- Attention to detail and accurate number handling.
Desirable Attributes
- Experience in waste/environmental sector finance (preferred but not mandatory).
- Familiarity with Workday, Adaptive Planning (acumatica) and financial reporting tools.
- Previous statutory accounts preparation.
