Overview:
Our client is a long-established and well-known Sheffield construction group with over 40 years of success across commercial and residential markets. With consistent year-on-year growth for the past decade and a reputation for looking after their people, they’re now seeking an Assistant Accountant: No.2 in Finance to join their tight-knit finance team.
This is a rare opportunity to step into a broad, hands-on role where you’ll become one of two key finance professionals supporting two trading entities and holding company. You’ll work closely with the No.1 in Finance, who is actively seeking their long-term successor—making this a genuine progression pathway over the next 4–5 years.
The Role
A varied, fast-paced position covering a wide range of accounting responsibilities, including:
- Weekly payroll processing and subcontractor payments
- Credit control, customer contact, issuing statements, chasing retentions
- Sales ledger and purchase ledger processing
- Stock booking and costing
- Daily cash sheet preparation for directors
- Monthly PAYE, CIS returns, reconciliations
- Supporting quarterly management accounts and year-end audit preparation
- Covering essential duties during holiday periods as part of a small, collaborative team

About You
We’re looking for someone who thrives in a broad SME finance environment:
- Experience as an Assistant Accountant or similar, ideally within a small finance team
- Strong IT capability and solid accounting technical skills
- Confident communicator—comfortable speaking with customers, suppliers, and internal teams
- Highly organised, able to manage your own workload, and quick to learn
- Background in credit control/payroll/general accounts would be beneficial
- AAT qualification helpful but not essential—qualified by experience welcomed
- Experience within construction type sectors beneficial but not essential
