Job Title: Assistant Adviser (Food Business Unit) Salary: c. £26,000 (Negotiable dependant on skills and experience) Location: Stoneleigh, Warwickshire Working Hours: 35 hours per week Contract Type: Permanent

The National Farmers’ Union (NFU) is the biggest farming organisation in the UK. We're proud to make a difference for all our members, by shaping attitudes towards British farming and leading the charge on a range of major issues, from climate change and food standards to rural crime and broadband rollout.

Purpose of the role & how you will contribute: You’ll play a key role in supporting the team’s work on commercial and political issues across the food supply chain. You’ll help shape food‑related policy, share insight with colleagues and members, and contribute to effective communication on key developments. Through research, retailer reviews, liaison with stakeholders and collaborative project work, you’ll support the NFU’s mission to champion British food and farming.

What you’ll bring: You’ll bring a solid understanding of the food supply chain, agricultural or horticultural production, and the wider food industry, supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, as is the ability to explain complex information clearly. You’ll be confident working both independently and as part of a team, with good analytical skills, sound organisation, and proficiency in Microsoft Office. A passion for British food and farming, willingness to travel, and the ability to build effective relationships will help you thrive in this role.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

Who we are Every day, we're the voice of around 43,000 British farmers and growers who produce food, making sure their concerns are heard at the heart of government both online and locally. This means developing strong relationships with everyone from NFU colleagues to government ministers. So, as well as having a high profile in both the media and Westminster, we work with and support local members through a network of regional and county offices across England and Wales. This team takes an active role in developing and influencing the policies that benefit farming businesses across the UK. This means keeping up to date with and responding to national and international developments, engaging with and advising NFU members, and putting their decisions into action. It’s exciting, complex work, covering every area of farming and dealing with a range of stakeholders, from government ministers, civil servants and the media, to local NFU branches. The sheer variety of our work means you can be involved in a wide range of projects from initial research to policy delivery. Our collaborative approach means you’ll find plenty of opportunities to build your knowledge – it’s up to you to take them.
