Job Description

Assistant Building Inspector - Bicester

Are you interested in being an Assistant Building Inspector? This could be your opportunity to excel as an Assistant Building Inspector within one of our Building Control teams, playing a critical role in safeguarding public safety, supporting sustainable building practices, and maintaining high standards in the built environment whilst supporting SOCOTEC’s continued success.

As SOCOTEC grows, so do our teams. We’re looking for a dedicated Assistant Building Inspector to join our Building & Real Estate division and wear the SOCOTEC badge with pride.

We are seeking a proactive, reliable, and flexible Assistant Building Inspector to join the Building Control team. In this role, you will be inspecting construction sites at various stages, advising on regulatory requirements, and working collaboratively with architects, builders and developers to ensure safe, structurally sound, and code-compliant buildings.

The tasks you will undertake will include (but are not limited to):

  • Conduct building inspections and regulatory compliance assessments – Perform site inspections at various construction stages to verify compliance with Building Regulations, review structural and architectural designs, and assess fire strategies, building materials, and specifications against relevant legislation
  • Prepare compliance documentation and maintain regulatory records – Produce detailed inspection reports, plan stage assessments, compliance certificates, and regulatory approval documentation while maintaining accurate, traceable records of all findings and recommendations
  • Provide Building Regulations consultancy and enforce compliance – Advise clients on Building Regulations matters, interpret and apply national and local building codes (including fire safety, energy efficiency, and accessibility requirements), and issue formal notices on any breaches under the Building Safety Act 2022

Qualifications

To be a successful Assistant Building Inspector, you should be able to demonstrate:

  • Construction qualification and regulatory knowledge – Hold a construction-related degree, HNC or equivalent qualification (or possess at least 3 years' construction trade experience), with commitment to register as a Building Inspector with the Building Safety Regulator and work towards achieving RBI status of 2A or higher
  • Strong communication and client relationship skills – Demonstrate excellent interpersonal abilities to build and maintain relationships with architects, developers, and clients while delivering exceptional client care and working effectively both independently and as part of project teams
  • Technical competence and problem-solving capability – Show IT proficiency in Word, Excel and related software, combined with analytical skills to solve complex construction compliance issues through development and implementation of suitable solutions
