About The Role
As an Assistant Building Surveyor, you will support the delivery of building surveying services across Barnet Council’s managed estate, including corporate buildings, community assets, schools, and libraries. Your responsibilities will include:
- Assisting senior surveyors in inspections, surveys, project delivery, statutory compliance, design, tendering, and contract management.
- Supporting structured professional development to progress towards RICS APC membership (Building Surveying pathway).
- Maintaining and safeguarding assets by ensuring they are safe, compliant, well-maintained, and fit for purpose.
- Gaining hands-on experience in core building surveying disciplines, such as:
- Condition assessments
- Feasibility studies
- Project design and delivery
- Statutory compliance (fire safety, asbestos, accessibility)
- Recording accurate documentation

- A degree (or equivalent) in Building Surveying, Building Studies, Construction, or a related built-environment discipline.
- Enrolment on the MRICS (or equivalent) Building Surveying pathway, with a commitment to achieving Chartered status.
- Practical experience through university projects, placements, internships, or early employment in surveying, construction, or property.
- Proven ability in drafting technical documentation, reports, schedules, or drawings.
- Knowledge of core competencies, including:
- Building pathology
- Construction technology
- Design and specification
- Contract administration
- Legal and regulatory compliance
- RICS best practice guidance
