Peripatetic Catering Assistant / Cook | West Lancashire
Location: West Lancashire Salary: £25,949 per annum (pro rata) Hours: 15 per week (variable, term-time only) Type: Permanent, Variable
Lancashire County Council supports catering operations for over 500 schools across Lancashire, providing 60,000+ school meals daily. We seek dedicated individuals to join our teams and assist with high-quality, nutritious meals for school children.
As a Peripatetic Catering Assistant/Cook, you will work flexibly across schools in West Lancashire, providing cover while supporting a team environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare dining areas, including setting up furniture and tidying away
- Assist with food and beverage preparation, cooking, and serving
- Clean all equipment and catering spaces
- Operate school kitchens independently when required (in the absence of a Unit Catering Supervisor, UCS)

Requirements
Essential:
- Experience in catering, food preparation, or frontline service (ideally in a school/educational setting)
- Ability to work as part of a team while demonstrating strong initiative
- Strong customer care skills
- Willingness to work under pressure and maintain professional standards
- Essential car user (as roles involve covering multiple schools across Preston)
Preferred:
- First-aid certification and/or health and safety awareness
Working Arrangements
- Contract: Term-time only, Monday–Friday, 15 hours/week (hours may vary based on demand and school meal uptake)
- Term-time only (no holidays over school vacations)
- Flexible cover across schools in West Lancashire
Considerations
- This role is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, requiring a check with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) if successful.
