The Opportunity

Our multi-disciplinary design, engineering and project delivery teams have a long history of delivering projects across the UK. We work with some of the most visionary clients in the sector, whose focus is on learning and rehabilitation as well as safety and security.

Projects of this nature draw on a wide range of regulatory knowledge and technical skill. With a heritage in construction, one of our principal strengths is the ability to coordinate between disciplines. This fluid and natural collaboration means we can deliver the most challenging of house block and ancillary buildings design with quicker response and delivery times.

As we grow, we are looking for an Assistant Design Manager. This is a great opportunity to learn! Growing your career to become an expert in this field. You will take ownership of your space, contribute to decision making, be creative and work with a wide range of contractors and clients, dealing with multi-disciplinary teams, working across a wide variety of sectors and projects.

Key Objectives

  • Understand the role of the design manager in influencing the delivery of the design - demonstrates curiosity about design processes, BIM, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
  • Witness the development of risk profile and the methods for mitigation
  • Develop skills in communication and collaboration between relevant parties
  • Establish an understanding of the flow of design and production information.
  • Develop an understanding of the plan required to deliver and the impact on resource levels.
  • Exposure to the contract mechanism to manage and identify change.
  • Develop commercial and project management skills.

Principal Responsibilities & Accountabilities

  • Support the overall coordination and compliance of the design output.
  • Assist in defining the contracted scope and compliance to the same
  • Help the design manager track progress of the design and key milestones against the agreed programme
  • Support in the tracking and reporting of key information as directed by the Design Manager.
  • Ensure the team comply with the document management requirements of the project as directed by the Design Manager
  • Build communication skills across design, project, and client teams through taking part in meetings to gain experience in the meeting environment and assist the design manager in the closing out of actions.
  • Gain experience in the company quality procedures and IMS.
  • Gain experience in the relationship with the customer and the impact on the project requirements.
  • Guide members of the design team to deliver safe, efficient and buildable solutions.
  • Exposure to and understand the purpose of project risk schedule for design and engineering including business risk.
  • Monitor the design brief/scope of service with the Design Manager to gain experience in the link to delivery and management of scope and contractual change.

Qualifications And Training

  • Ideally recently qualified at degree level or equivalent in an engineering discipline (e.g. civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, or architectural engineering)
  • Working towards professional registration with ICE, IStructE, IET or CIBSE
  • Potential to be involved in BakerHicks graduate programme

Technical Skills And Experience

  • Ideally an understanding of project management principles, methodologies and tools
  • Good time and organisational skills
  • Good communication style and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work within a team
  • Ideally an understanding of multi-disciplinary requirements and experience of the technical aspects
