Assistant Designer – ASOS

THE ROLE

As an Assistant Designer at ASOS, you will be working closely with the Designer/Senior Designer, designing the amazing ASOS DESIGN ranges for our trend-loving customer. If you love fashion design, researching the latest trends, and want to be part of a fast-paced, fashion-forward design team, this could be the opportunity for you.

  • The ability to translate inspiration into compelling product Technical development and processes can be supported within the team.

The Design Team draws inspiration from all over the world, including:

  • Street style
  • Vintage shopping

  • All things creative We design the latest product for our ranges, focusing on newness and delivering the most exciting product across a wide range of categories for our fashion-loving customers, regardless of their style.

PRINCIPLE ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Researching, developing, and designing ranges for ASOS DESIGN, including:
    • Identifying key shapes, colours, and fabrics for the season
    • Building a range offering choice for our global customer base
  • Reacting to sales information to create commercially relevant, fashion-forward ranges
  • Researching current and future trends via a collective of different sources to:
    • Identify newness
    • Interpret into first-to-market pieces
  • Working with the technical team on initial fits, including:
    • Identifying and helping problem-solve
    • Bringing a strong design perspective
    • Supporting with technical solutions where required
  • Building relationships with suppliers and advising factories on:
    • Trend direction
    • Construction
    • Key details
    • Materials
    • Trims
  • Adhering to the critical path to achieve deadlines, ensuring product development aligns with the relevant and optimum selling period
  • Demonstrating the ability to:
    • Research and develop unique product
    • Work on both long lead-time and quick reaction Test & React ranges

JOB FUNCTIONAL KNOWLEDGE

  • Assistant Designer with experience in designing for Womenswear and/or Footwear & Accessories
  • Strong fashion handwriting aligned with the ASOS customer
  • Previous experience in designing for an aspirational brand or similar high-street retail
  • Experience working with Far East, European, and UK suppliers
  • Experience partnering with a Buyer to plan and deliver:
    • A balanced range
    • First-to-market pieces
  • Commercial handwriting and deep understanding of the ASOS Brand and Customer
  • Demonstrates:
    • Strong taste level
    • Creative instinct and idea generation
  • Excellent technical ability (though not fully required at this level)
  • Strong computer skills: Photoshop, Adobe, CAD, Miro, AI design

CATEGORY PLANNING & TRADING

  • Delivering on brand OKRs
  • Consistently using data and analytics to:
    • Trade risks and opportunities
    • Proactively shape future department strategy
  • Recommending creative actions to:
    • Designer/Senior Designer
    • Management
  • Contributing to:
    • Critical path management
    • Speed-to-market initiatives for the department, aligned with brand strategy and Heart initiatives
  • Identifying opportunities to be first-to-market

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Experience in, or relevant studies related to, Fashion Design
  • Fashion portfolio submission required as part of the application
  • A fashion-forward perspective, with:
    • Clear handwriting and relevance to ASOS customer
  • Strong time management
  • Confidence to:
    • Identify problems
    • Make improvement suggestions
    • Seek practical ways to overcome barriers
    • Remain calm under pressure
  • Ability to:
    • Communicate with the team and senior management about:
      • Department performance
      • Strategy
  • Willingness to travel in the UK and potentially internationally for:
    • Supplier meetings
    • Inspiration and development trips
  • Ability to work in an agile and dynamic style, identifying risks and opportunities

  • Proactive nature with a willingness to:
    • Work independently within a framework
  • Thrives in a fast-paced, agile environment, demonstrating:
    • Exceptional organisational skills
    • Ability to adapt and prioritise
  • AI experience, including tools like:
    • Midjourney
