About the Role
This is a role which will be key to the Trust’s role as leader and influencer in South East London and to achieving Essentia’s strategic ambitions. The role is highly autonomous and ultimately accountable for interpretations of legal and national policies and interpreting this into a deliverable strategy and operational practice that ensures GSTT sites are compliant.
This is a pivotal leadership position responsible for leading the engineering and building governance strategy, operational procedures, competency and operational auditing for all infrastructure services across Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.
The role will be responsible for leading infrastructure strategies and development to ensure the estate and associated building and engineering infrastructure is fit for purpose, legally compliant, whilst monitoring that the teams meet all technical and legal requirements.
The successful candidate will possess a high level of financial acumen, technical expertise, the ability to lead major function transformation to deliver operational excellence, patient, staff and visitor safety, and effective management of the estates backlog using risk-based prioritisation methodologies.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the infrastructure strategy for the GSTT estate, ensuring it is legally compliant, safe and with appropriate levels of resilience.
- Drive a safety culture with the team and with all suppliers to ensure the delivery of a safe, healthy and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors.
- Ensure that an effective governance strategy is in place to evidence organisational compliance with engineering related legislative requirements.
- Ensure suitable and sufficient operational policies and related processes are in place and monitor that this is embedded.
- Development and ongoing maintenance of a detailed dashboard to report against compliance.
- Provide technical and engineering support and coaching as necessary to ensure all Responsible Persons and other designated persons are able to carry out their duties; and to assist in the development of RPs, CPs and other designated persons to provide a balanced succession plan.
- Continuously monitor and review services; identify and implement service, operational and financial improvements to deliver within allocated budgets, improving value for money, including being responsive to changing business needs.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
