Assistant Ecologist / Data Analyst

Thermal Vision Ecology builds on 15 years of expertise from Thermal Vision Research, a provider of FLIR thermal imaging solutions to the R&D and research sector. The organization focuses on creating dedicated, affordable thermal imaging solutions tailored specifically for ecologists.

Leveraging deep technical knowledge and field experience, Thermal Vision Ecology supports ecological projects that require accurate, reliable thermal data. Team members collaborate closely with research and conservation professionals to deliver tools that enhance ecological monitoring and decision-making.


Role Description: Onsite Technician

This is a seasonal part-time role within Thermal Vision Ecology, focusing on supporting the deployment and operation of thermal imaging solutions in ecological field settings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and configure FLIR and related thermal imaging equipment for field use.
  • Perform remote diagnostics to troubleshoot technical issues.
  • Guide onsite teams through equipment setup, calibration, and troubleshooting, ensuring tailored alignment with project requirements.
  • Maintain accurate records of system configurations and incident reports.
  • Provide clear technical guidance and training to users, who may not be technically experienced.
  • Collaborate with ecologists and project managers to optimise equipment performance.
  • Ensure adherence to safety, data integrity, and environmental best practices.
  • Communicate regularly with internal teams regarding equipment status and potential improvements.

Experience & Qualifications

Essential:

  • Background in or strong interest in ecology, environmental science, or related fields.
  • Full UK driving licence (essential for fieldwork).
  • Foundational understanding of technical operations, including configuring and troubleshooting imaging equipment.
  • Proven ability to balance independently working remotely with managing multiple tasks and collaborating across teams.
  • Adherence to data security and safety standards in field or laboratory environments.
  • Clear communication and reporting skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

** Preferred/Advantageous:**

  • Prior experience supporting research or conservation projects.
  • Technical experience with FLIR thermal cameras or other sensor equipment.
  • Commercial drone licence or hands-on drone piloting experience.
  • Experience in remote technical support, diagnostics, and incident report documentation.

Strong Desired:

  • Practical or academic background in fields such as electronics, engineering, or environmental technology.
  • Previous involvement in pick-and-mix fieldwork, where adaptability and technical troubleshooting are required.
