Assistant Engineer
The Assistant Engineer will support the Lead Engineer in ensuring that all design work across the Havant Thicket Reservoir (HTR) programme is technically robust, compliant, and aligned with Portsmouth Water’s standards. You will help manage design assurance processes, coordinate technical reviews, and contribute to the development of detailed designs that will shape the reservoir’s construction, commissioning, and eventual handover. This role is ideal for someone early in their engineering career who is eager to grow, contribute to a nationally significant infrastructure project, and work within a multidisciplinary environment.
What will you be doing?
Key Responsibilities
- Support Engineering Lead, who is driving design assurance process, through meeting organisation, minute taking, tracking review responses, forecasting and regular reporting of the assurance process.
- Track design reviews for the approval of Designs Submissions by the main works contractors.
- Track the response to Technical Queries raised by the main works contractors ensure they responded to in accordance with timescales identified the Contract.
- Collate responses from stakeholders involved in the Design Submission review process and rationalise them onto a single Client Comment Sheet.
- Engage with colleagues and stakeholders (as directed by the Engineering Lead) in the core Portsmouth Water business, especially Operations, Water Quality and Consents Teams to secure their engagement, reporting back to Engineering Lead.
- Support and assist the Engineering Lead in developing new systems and processes to improve the Engineering assurance function.
- Take minutes and engage in the regular meetings with the Design Guardians, and engage in technical workshops between PW operations and mains works contractors.
- Track the response to Technical Queries and Design Submissions by the main works contractors and manage the liaison, input and expectations of all stakeholders.
- Coordinate general requests from and to contractors on engineering matters.

What do you need?
Skills, Qualifications & Competencies
- Strong communication and presentation skills
- Effective stakeholder engagement skills
- Good understanding and appreciation of the “design process” and its commercial implications.
- Strong team player with good communication, interpersonal and presentation skills.
- The ability to manage and coordinate inputs from multiple parties.
- Ability to work to deadlines with a focus on results and quality.
- High competency in Excel/PowerPoint/Word/Teams.
- Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering related field of study.
- Earthworks and/or pipeline project experience.
- Experience of design and construction development in a BIM, common data environment.
- Post-graduate experience.
