Engineer/Assistant Engineer – Pavement Engineering

About the Role

Assist in delivering pavement projects through investigation reports, design, and site supervision. Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting road inspections and preparing treatment recommendations.
  • Demonstrating technical expertise in pavement design, maintenance, and construction.
  • Supporting senior engineers in planning, programming, and cost estimation.
  • Developing designs in line with DMRB and MCHW standards.
  • Providing training and mentorship to Graduate Engineers and Apprentices.
  • Creating designs using AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
  • Liaising confidently with clients and stakeholders.
  • Compiling technical reports, drawings, and design calculations.
  • Supporting fee estimates and scope documentation.

Ensuring project delivery aligns with company management systems (health and safety, project management, and risk management).

Your Team

The WSP Pavement Engineering team is seeking an Engineer/Assistant Engineer to join an experienced, growing group delivering large-scale pavement projects globally and in the UK. You’ll contribute to projects from feasibility to detailed design and construction, working alongside respected engineers under the guidance of the Discipline Lead.

Successful candidates will demonstrate proven technical abilities to enhance and grow the team, aligning with industry best practices.

Key Requirements

Essential

  • Practical pavement engineering knowledge (design, investigations, maintenance).
  • Familiarity with road and airfield pavement projects.
  • Understanding of UK pavement methodologies (e.g., MCHW/DMRB).
  • Knowledge of material failure and asset management principles.
  • Experience with civil engineering discipline or related roles.
  • Proficiency in road operations, maintenance, and renewal practices.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Progress towards Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered (CEng) status with a relevant institution (ICE, CIHT).
  • National Highways Accredited Pavement Engineer certification.
  • Experience with non-DMRB pavement design.
