Assistant File Handler
Assistant File Handler (AFH) – Legal – Disease Department
Department: Legal Location: Bolton
About the Role
The Assistant File Handler (AFH) will work closely with a Partner within the Disease Department, specialising in managing Hourly Rate Industrial Disease claims. Claims may include:
- NIHL (Noise Induced Hearing Loss)
- HAVS (Hand Arm Vibration Syndrome)
- Other potential disease-related cases
The role involves advancing claims to resolution efficiently in a fast-paced legal environment, requiring familiarity with complex and high-value litigation.
Key Accountabilities
As an Assistant File Handler (AFH), you will:
- Carry out delegated tasks under direction from a Partner, ensuring:
- Compliance with client SLAs
- Adherence to court directions and legal timelines
- Drafting court documents
- Engaging in negotiations
- Providing advocacy, including attendance at telephone hearings
- Analysing evidence and preparing document bundles
- Completing and updating management information (MI)
- Instructing and liaising with Counsel and experts
- Reporting progress to clients
- Achieving chargeable targets

Required Experience, Skills, and Qualifications
Ideal candidates will have:
- Proven experience in claims handling (pre-litigation or litigated)
- Knowledge of the litigation process
- Ability to take structured instruction from a Partner
- Initiative to take on new challenges and career progression within File Handler roles
- Awareness of industrial disease legal trends and market dynamics
- Skill in working to tight targets and deadlines
- Exceptional attention to detail
- Empathy for client needs and expectations
