Assistant General Manager

Assistant General Manager – Catering & Hospitality (Imperial War Museum London)

Salary: Up to £42,000 per annum Location: IWM London Contract Type: Full-time, permanent, 5 out of 7 days (includes both evenings and some weekends)

About the Role

We are seeking a proactive and people-focused Assistant General Manager to support the day-to-day catering and hospitality operations at the Imperial War Museum London, based in Lambeth North (a short walk from Elephant & Castle). This is an outstanding opportunity to contribute to world-class visitor experiences within a historic institution that welcomes guests from globally.

You will work closely with the General Manager to:

  • Ensure the smooth running of the busy café and multiple event spaces
  • Deliver exceptional service standards in both conference and large-scale event catering
  • Support contractual improvements and operational efficiency

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead all catering and hospitality operations across café, restaurant, conference, and event spaces in collaboration with the General Manager
  • Maintain high service standards through active floor leadership, staff engagement, and stakeholder relationships
  • Foster strong partnerships with venue stakeholders, respond to guest feedback, and ensure client satisfaction
  • Oversee budgets, stock control, and staffing levels to meet commercial targets and drive operational efficiency
  • Ensure full compliance with Health & Safety and Food Safety regulations, supporting training programmes and policy adherence
  • Lead, motivate, and mentor teams across multiple outlets, assisting with:
    • Staff training
    • Scheduling & staffing
    • Performance management
  • Contribute to strategic initiatives, aligning daily operations with organisational goals

About You

Essential Criteria

  • Hospitality leadership experience as an Assistant Manager, Operations Manager, or Deputy General Manager (preferably in multi-outlet venues)
  • Proven track record in managing busy, high-footfall environments with varying service demands (e.g., café, conference, or visitor attractions)
  • Strong financial acumen, including budgeting, cost control, and labour management
  • Exceptional leadership skills, with experience in:
    • Coaching and developing teams
    • Conflict resolution
    • Training new staff
  • Confident communication skills, including stakeholder engagement and guest relations
  • A genuine passion for food, hospitality, and creating memorable visitor experiences
  • Ability to adapt to fast-paced environments, balancing day-to-day operations with long-term projects
