Assistant Groundsperson (Manchester City Football Academy)
Permanent, full-time role at Manchester City Football Academy, supporting grounds maintenance across Manchester City Football Club sites.
You will help prepare, maintain, and enhance high-quality football environments for players, colleagues, and visitors while building your skills within a professional sports turf setting. The role includes regular weekend and matchday working.
About the Role
The Assistant Groundsperson will contribute to the delivery of excellent grounds maintenance, ensuring pitches, landscaping, and facilities are safe, presentable, and operational at all times.
Working with the Grounds team, you’ll assist in:
- Pitch preparation (marking, setting up surfaces, granular application when competent)
- Landscaping and facility upkeep (hands-on maintenance tasks, project support, emergency repairs)
- Maintenance of equipment (safety checks, preparation for use)
- Team collaboration (with colleagues, contractors, and stakeholders)

Responsibilities
Core Duties
Support day-to-day grounds maintenance across Manchester City sites, ensuring:
- Pitches, training surfaces, and landscaping meet Club standards
- Operational safety through compliance with safeguarding and health/safety protocols
- Immediate repairs for critical issues
Key Tasks
- Pitch Preparation:
- Assist with marking and setup for games and training sessions
- Maintain machinery (traction control, aeration equipment)
- Apply granulars where qualified
- Facility Maintenance:
- Groundskeeping (grass care, drainage, edge trimming)
- Assisting with landscape projects when required
- Supporting temporary repairs or hazardous-site adjustments
- Project Work & Team Support:
- Collaborate with the team on longer-term maintenance
- Maintain equipment in safe, operational condition
- Operate under team-led permissions and CFG best practices
Requirements
Essential Qualifications & Skills
⚽ Experience or knowledge of sports turf or grounds maintenance, preferably in winter sports/collegiate/amateur football roles.
⚽ NVQ Level 2 in Sports Turf (or equivalent study; Certification in Progress accepted).
⚽ Practical ability to:
- Support pitch preparation (marking, setting up, machinery pre-checks)
- Apply granulars under supervision
⚽ Health & Safety awareness, especially in **grounds/part time applications.
⚽ Strong strategic team player with:
- effective communication
- reliable presence
- adaptability (flexibility to weekend and matchday schedules)
⚽ Motivation to develop practical skills in sports turf management.
Nice-to-Have
- Firsthand exposure to cooperation in a football/academy setting
- Past experience with pitch consultants or grounds supplier relationships
