Assistant Headteacher – Personal Development and Wellbeing

Location

Groveside School, Reading, RG2 7AY

Hours & Contract

  • 37.5 hours per week (Monday–Friday)
  • Permanent | Term Time Only
  • Salary: Up to £50,000 per annum (experience-dependent, not pro-rated) plus a £1,000 welcome bonus (paid in instalments) – T&Cs apply
  • Start: January 2027

Groveside School is expanding its leadership team and seeking an exceptional Assistant Headteacher for Personal Development & Wellbeing to align with its mission of creativity, connection, and exceptional pupil experiences.

This role offers a rare opportunity to take a strategic lead on personal development, wellbeing, and wider curriculum in a setting that prioritises holistic, nurturing growth.


Key Responsibilities

  • Inspire and lead—deliver exceptional teaching, set high expectations, and champion personal development, emotional wellness, and neurodiverse needs.
  • Curriculum excellence—develop, implement, and refine an enriching, trauma-informed curriculum with robust assessment to ensure strong outcomes for all pupils.
  • Relationship-centred practice—build secure, trusting relationships using trauma-informed and restorative approaches with young people across school boundaries.
  • Staff support & coaching—motivate, develop, and support colleagues in a collaborative team while ensuring consistent implementation of policies.
  • Strategic leadership—work alongside the Headteacher to link personal development, wellbeing, and whole-school improvement initiatives.
  • Collaborative partnerships—liaise effectively with pupils, parents, families, external clinical partners, and educational networks.
  • Inclusivity & safeguarding—advocate for safeguarding, wellbeing, and inclusivity to foster an aspirational, supportive culture.
  • Monitoring progress—join the leadership team in pupil-centred tracking of achievements and well-being progress to personalise outcomes.

Requirements

Essential

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent requirement.
  • Proven ability to deliver high-quality teaching and model outstanding practice, inspiring peers.
  • Strong leadership with strategic direction experience in teaching, learning, and curriculum improvement.
  • Commitment to wellbeing, inclusion, and SENH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) with expertise building trusting adult-student relationships.
  • Deep understanding of curriculum design, assessment systems, and pupil progress tracking.
  • Emotional intelligence and resilience—lateral, collaborative, and solution-focused across multi-agency teams.
  • Reflective practice with strong safeguarding awareness and listen-to-learn philosophy.

Preferred

  • Proven experience in SEND/Senk environments.
  • Experience in developing personalised mental health pathways for pupils.
  • Familiarity with trauma-sensitive pedagogies.
  • Network of professional connections in specialist educational provision.

Groveside School is a Specialist College for 7–16-year-olds with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health Needs. The school opened in September 2024 and plans to grow with a focus on:
