Assistant Headteacher: Curriculum, Teaching and Learning

Lead an ambitious curriculum where every student can thrive

Victoria School is seeking a dynamic and values-led Assistant Headteacher to lead curriculum, teaching, learning, and assessment in our specialist setting for students with ASC, PMLD and complex needs.

This is a key leadership role shaping an ambitious, inclusive curriculum for students with specialised requirements.


About the Role

The role is based in either the upper or lower school, depending on your experience. As the Assistant Headteacher (Curriculum), you will:

  • Ensure our curriculum is coherent, purposeful, and consistently delivered to support:
    • Progress
    • Communication
    • Independence
    • Preparation for adulthood

Your core responsibility will be to design and maintain a high-quality educational experience that meets the unique needs of each student.


Key Responsibilities

Curriculum Leadership

  • Lead the development and quality assurance of the curriculum across all pathways
  • Ensure that sequencing aligns with EHCP outcomes, while remaining accessible and relevant
  • Maintain coherence, consistency, and progression across the entire learning environment

Teaching, Learning & Assessment

  • Secure strong, evidence-informed teaching practices across school
  • Develop and implement meaningful assessment systems to track progress and personalised outcomes
  • Use data-driven insights to identify strategic priorities and areas for improvement

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Develop and support leadership capacity within staff teams
  • Work closely with families and external professionals to understand and enhance student needs
  • Ensure the school is prepared for external evaluations, planning, and inspection processes

About You

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • Experienced leadership grounded in an inclusive, student-centred approach
  • Deep knowledge of SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) curriculum design and assessment frameworks
  • Ability to strategically drive curriculum improvement while supporting individual student behaviour change
  • Excellent collaboration skills with families, guardians, and outside professionals
  • Commitment to ** Preparation for Adulthood** principles and practical implementation

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Proven expertise in SEND curriculum delivery (preferably within ASC, PMLD, or complex needs settings)
  • Strong experience leading curriculum teams (or equivalent function)
  • Skilled in incorporating data-informed assessment into teaching practice
  • Experience working within Education Health & Care Plans (EHCP) frameworks

Desirable Attributes

  • Specialisation in inclusive pedagogies for neurodiverse students
  • Professional development background in excellence, mentorship, or pedagogic research
  • A track record of inspection readiness or monitoring improvements in practice
