Salary: £61,534 - £67,898 per annum (excluding London Weighting) (L8–L12, pro-rata for part-time) Working Hours: Full-time Contract Type: Permanent Closing Date: 9th July 2026 Interview Date(s): To be confirmed (TBC)
About the Role
Oakfield Short Stay School is Leicestershire County Council’s specialist provision for school-aged children who have been permanently excluded or are at risk of exclusion from mainstream education. As part of its development, this role will support the Secondary phase of Oakfield School as it expands, ensuring vulnerable pupils have access to tailored educational support to secure their next steps.
Role Overview: The Secondary Phase Leader (Teaching & Learning) will:
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for teaching, learning, and assessment in the Secondary phase.
- Ensure assessment systems are robust, effective, and evidence pupil progress from individual starting points.
- Support high standards of teaching and learning through quality assurance, coaching, continuous professional development (CPD), appraisal, and line management of:
- Early Career Teachers (ECT)
- Unqualified Teachers (UQT)
- Relevant support staff (e.g., speech/language therapists, SEN specialists).
Collaboratively work with:
- School leaders
- Staff
- Parents/carers
- Leicestershire schools
- Local Authority Inclusion Team
- External agencies To deliver inclusion, safeguarding, health & safety, behaviour management, attendance progression, and pupil reintegration.
Key Responsibilities
Lead, Inspire & Coordinate
- Lead implementation of assessment systems in Secondary, ensuring systems track meaningful progress.
Support Reintegration & Outcomes
- Ensure assessment tools provide clear insights for evaluating teaching quality and pupil progress.
- Collaborate with teams to analyse trends and inform decisions on pupil reintegration strategies.

Accountability & Leadership
- Lead the ECT programme and fulfil statutory duties (e.g., QTS assessments, safeguarding).
- Design and manage professional development programmes for staff.
- Represent the school in external stakeholder meetings.
Promote Inclusion & Engagement
- Model inclusive practices and promoting education for all pupils, including those with complex needs.
- Ensure all pupils feel valued, respected, and supported in a cohesive learning environment.

About You
Essential Criteria
To be considered, applicants must demonstrate the ability to:
- Moderate experience in teaching the Secondary phase AND/OR specialist training settings.
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
- Substantial experience with:
- Children with complex needs (including behavioural & educational challenges)
- Pupil reintegration strategies
- SEND legislation/internal SEN policy guidance
- Strategic leadership in:
- Curriculum improvement and evidence-based practices
- Whole-school impact metrics
- Addressing national educational challenges (e.g., Ofsted requirements, local inclusion strategies)
- Qualifications:
- QTLS preferred/present (active registration/working towards)
- LCC Designated Safeguarding Training or equivalent
