Role Overview
Oakfield Short Stay School is Leicestershire’s specialised education provision for school-aged children who are:
- Permanently excluded, or
- At risk of permanent exclusion from mainstream schools.
This is an exciting time of expansion as the age range of Oakfield School has widened. As a key member of the team, you’ll support our mission to provide alternative but targeted education for children who cannot thrive in mainstream settings—helping them secure their next successful educational steps.
This strategic leadership role requires you to:
- Oversee teaching, learning, and assessment in the Secondary phase.
- Ensure assessment systems are effective, rigorous, and holistically supportive of pupil progress.
- Lead on high-quality teaching and learning, including coaching, continuous professional development (CPD), appraisal, and line management of early career teachers, unqualified teachers, and supporting staff.
- Contribute to inclusion, safeguarding, health & safety, attendance, behaviour, and reintegration with schools, parents/carers, external agencies, and the Local Authority Inclusion Team to achieve positive outcomes for vulnerable and excluded pupils.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Implementation
- Implement and evaluate assessment systems in the Secondary phase to evidence pupil progress accurately.
- Lead the Early Career Teacher (ECT) programme, ensuring structured support, statutory compliance, and professional growth.
- Uphold strategic accountability, including statutory duties and relevant policies for safeguarding, inclusion, and special educational needs.
Teaching & Curriculum Innovation
- Champion quality assurance in teaching and learning through coaching, mentoring, and data-driven review.
- Advocate for research-informed curriculum practices to enhance teaching efficacy and pupil outcomes.
- Support development of inclusive, safeguarding-aligned educational programmes that promote progress, behaviour, and reintegration.

Duties Beyond the Classroom
- Work collaboratively with school leaders, staff, parents, local schools, and agencies to ensure pupils’ needs are met.
- Chair and contribute to strategic initiatives around inclusion, safeguarding, health, behaviour, attendance, and reintegration where necessary.
- Address national education reforms with forward-thinking leadership, adapting the school’s approach to improvements required in policy and practice.

About You
Essential Requirements You must possess:
- Significant professional experience in the secondary education sector (or a specialist setting) exclusively working with challenging student needs.
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
- Mastery of Special Educational Needs (SEN) legislation and local county policies, with experience closing gaps for complex needs pupils.
- Proven leadership track record—preferably in school improvement, department-level management, or whole-school curriculum strategy that maximises progress.
- Effective experience leading research-based improvements in teaching and learning systems.
- Demonstratable commitment to inclusion, safeguarding, and the specific transition programmes for excluded/at-risk students.
Desirable Indicators
- Professional registration (e.g., QTLS—qualified in teaching via additional assessment pathway).
- LCC’s Designated Safeguarding Training already completed.
