Hampshire Highways has an exciting opportunity to join our progressive and dynamic team as an Assistant Highway Engineer!

The Role:

Are you practical, proactive and enjoy a varied working day? Do you thrive both outdoors and in the office, enjoy working with people and want to make a real difference to local communities?

Join Hampshire’s Highways team and play a key role in maintaining and improving over 8,000km of highways across one of the UK’s most beautiful counties. This is a diverse and rewarding position where no two days are the same.

Working alongside Highway Engineers, you’ll provide technical support to help deliver Hampshire’s Highways Maintenance Service. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Carrying out highway inspections
  • Identifying and helping resolve maintenance issues
  • Raising works orders
  • Conducting site audits
  • Working closely with our service delivery partners to ensure high standards are achieved

You’ll also have the opportunity to support the development of junior colleagues through training and mentoring, making this an excellent role for someone who enjoys sharing their knowledge and helping others succeed.

What you’ll do:

In this varied and rewarding role, you’ll play a key part in supporting the delivery and maintenance of the highway network. Working alongside experienced Highway Engineers, you’ll provide technical support, carry out highway inspections, and help identify practical solutions to a range of highway-related issues.

You’ll be responsible for:

  • Raising works orders
  • Conducting site audits
  • Working closely with our service partners to ensure works are delivered safely, efficiently, and to a high standard

What we’re looking for:

We're looking for a proactive and motivated individual with relevant highways experience who can confidently manage their workload with minimal supervision. Strong communication and customer service skills are essential, as you'll regularly work with colleagues, residents, and stakeholders to deliver excellent outcomes for Hampshire's communities.

Flexibility is key in this role. You'll need to be able to travel across Hampshire to a variety of locations and, on occasion, work outside normal hours to help respond to severe weather events and other emergencies. As such, you'll need a full current driving licence and regular access to a reliable vehicle.
