The Opportunity
We're looking for an Assistant Highways Engineer to join our growing Highways team, where you'll work alongside experienced engineers delivering innovative transport solutions that improve connectivity, safety, and sustainability for communities across the UK.

About The Role
As an Assistant Highways Engineer, you'll support the delivery of highway design projects from initial feasibility through to detailed design and construction support. Working as part of an experienced team, you'll contribute to a variety of schemes across the transport sector, including local authority, national highways, residential, commercial, and active travel projects.
Your Responsibilities Will Include
- Assisting with the design of highways, junction improvements, and infrastructure schemes.
- Producing engineering drawings, technical reports, and design calculations.
- Supporting the preparation of feasibility studies, concept designs, and detailed design packages.
- Using industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and Infodrainage to develop engineering designs.
- Assisting with highway drainage, earthworks, and pavement design where appropriate.
- Supporting project delivery to programme, budget, and quality requirements.
- Liaising with colleagues across multiple disciplines to deliver integrated design solutions.
- Attending client meetings, site visits, and design reviews.
- Developing an understanding of relevant standards including DMRB, Manual for Streets, and local authority guidance.
- Working towards professional accreditation with the ICE or another relevant institution.

About You
- A degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Experience within a highways or civil engineering environment through employment, placements, or internships.
- An understanding of highway design principles and relevant UK design standards.
- Experience with using Infodrainage.
- Experience using AutoCAD, with knowledge of Civil 3D desirable.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Good organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
- A collaborative approach and willingness to learn from experienced engineers.
- A commitment to working towards professional chartership (ICE or equivalent).
- A full UK driving licence (desirable depending on project requirements).
