Assistant Library Manager

Suffolk County Council Address: Bury St Edmunds Library, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk IP33 1TZ, on-site working Salary: £28,598 per annum (pro rata) Hours: 32.88 hours per week, flexible pattern outlined below Contract: Permanent

As an Assistant Library Manager, you’ll play a pivotal role in creating a welcoming, vibrant, and community-focused library environment. Working alongside the Library Manager, you’ll lead a team, maintain smooth operations, and ensure every visitor—regardless of age or background—enjoys an inspiring experience. This includes:

  • Championing inclusive services
  • Organising engaging activities
  • Managing stock
  • Supporting staff
  • Maintaining high standards

This is a hands-on, people-centered role where initiative, creativity, and passion for service excellence make a real impact.


Please note: This is a physically active role involving bending and lifting.


Working Pattern

Week 1:

  • Tuesday: 8.00 AM – 5.00 PM (8 hours)
  • Wednesday: 8.30 AM – 5.45 PM (8.25 hours)
  • Thursday: 8.00 AM – 5.45 PM (8.75 hours)
  • Friday: 8.00 AM – 4.30 PM (7.5 hours)

Week 2:

  • Tuesday: 8.00 AM – 5.00 PM (8 hours)
  • Wednesday: 8.30 AM – 5.45 PM (8.25 hours)
  • Thursday: 8.00 AM – 5.45 PM (8.75 hours)
  • Saturday: 8.00 AM – 5.15 PM (8.25 hours)

Flexibility to support other branches, including some evening work, may be required.


Key Responsibilities

  • Shape a community-focused library environment
  • Lead a dedicated team and ensure smooth daily operations
  • Support and oversee library stock
  • Organise and deliver community activities (e.g., children’s crafts, story sessions)
  • Provide exceptional customer service across all ages
  • Maintain high standards in safety, presentation, and service delivery
  • Foster collaboration with volunteers, schools, and community groups

Requirements

We’re seeking a passionate individual who:

  • Delivers exceptional customer service to all guests
  • Communicates effectively, building strong relationships with colleagues, visitors, and the wider community
  • Shows confidence and enthusiasm when engaging with young people
  • Is IT literate, comfortable with online platforms, social media, and digital tools
  • Possesses strong organisational skills, including stock management, planning, and maintaining a welcoming environment
  • Remains calm, professional, and solution-focused under pressure
  • Demonstrates flexibility to support various branches, weekends, and overnight shifts if needed

Whilst experience in customer-service roles, experience with children, and an interest in books and computers is advantageous, we welcome all applicants—those at any stage of their career.
