United Utilities is looking for a proactive and technically skilled Assistant Maintenance Workshop Controller to help maintain and improve a fleet of more than 2300 assets including around 300 HGVs. This is a fantastic opportunity to step into a fast paced, hands-on environment where your expertise will directly support the smooth running of critical operations across the business.

About The Role And Team

As part of our Transport Services team, you will play a key role in keeping our fleet safe, reliable and cost effective. You will support Workshop Technicians day to day, act as the technical lead on complex diagnostics and help secure strong first time MOT pass rates across HGVs, trailers and LCVs.

Working alongside a skilled and supportive team, you will contribute to inspections, repairs and proactive maintenance planning that minimises downtime and extends asset life. Your problem solving skills and attention to detail will help maintain high standards of safety, compliance and workshop performance.

Accountabilities & Responsibilities

  • Perform Monthly Workshop Health and Safety inspections, liaise with the Workshop Controller and take appropriate action to minimise Health and Safety risks in the workshop.
  • Responsible for maximising fleet availability by ensuring adherence to VOR targets for the garage, and to ensure all maintenance compliance obligations are met.
  • To carry out fleet maintenance on a range of assets including, HGV, trailers, plant equipment.
  • Ensure that all service KPIs are achieved by carrying out effective maintenance on a range of assets to maintain compliance in accordance with operator license.
  • Oversee Technicians to ensure a safe working environment and as a mentor to apprentices, allocating workload to technicians and managing the flow of work through the workshop to minimise VOR levels.
  • Be a technical SME on fleet maintenance to provide guidance to other fleet technicians and provide support for upskilling in accordance with the business requirements.
  • Work with the team to prepare HGV's, trailers and LCV MOT's ensuring first time MOT pass rate.
  • To provide day to day support to the Workshop Controller, deputising for all aspects of the role when they are out of the workshop and supervising the workshop mechanics.
  • Responsible for appropriate stocking of parts in the workshop stores, ensuring compliance with the procurement process and the use of correct suppliers.
  • Provide development support to workshop apprentices as a buddy.

Technical Skills & Experience

  • Expert in vehicle electrics and computer fault diagnostic.
  • Strong problem solver who works well both independently and in a team, with resilience, self-motivation and an approachable, collaborative mindset.
  • Significant experience in a transport maintenance environment with a thorough understanding of the technical requirements of running a workshop and experienced with HGV's, Tankers, Light Vans and Plant.
  • A multi-skilled mechanic who can maintain and repair alternatively powered assets such as electric and gas vehicles.
  • Understanding of the Operator’s Licence and the regulatory framework within which the team operates in accordance with the 'Guide to Maintaining Road Worthiness'.

Essential Qualifications

  • NVQ level 3 HGV Repair and Maintenance certificate.
  • IRTEC vehicle inspection technician.
  • Must have a valid driving licence including C&E driving licence.
