Assistant Manager
Assistant General Manager/ GM in Training
The Ship, Wandsworth - Salary or hourly rate available depending on preference
We're looking for an experienced Young's Deputy Manager or General Manager in Training who can hit the ground running in one of the busiest pubs in the estate.
The Ship is famous for its huge summers and high-volume trading. We recently took £100,000 in a single day over the Bank Holiday weekend, so this role is all about thriving in a fast-paced environment, leading large teams, and maintaining exceptional standards under pressure.
With a new leadership team in place, it's an exciting time to join us. Our new General Manager joins from The Hope & Anchor, Brixton and The Wheatsheaf, Borough Market, while our new Head Chef, Hamoun, has recently moved across from The Windmill, Clapham to elevate our food offer.
What We're Looking For
This role would suit an ambitious Deputy Manager, Designate Manager, or aspiring General Manager who is looking to gain valuable experience in a flagship, high-volume site before taking on their own pub in the near future.
You'll need:
Previous management experience within Young's or a similar premium pub operator Strong organisational and administrative skills Excellent attention to detail (you'll be helping keep the office side of the business running smoothly) Confidence leading and developing junior managers The ability to manage a large team in a busy, high-volume environment A proactive approach and the ability to work independently

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
