The Opportunity
We are looking for an Assistant or Civil Engineer to join our Rivers and Coastal Management team in Cambridge, Reading, Exeter or Taunton, supporting a portfolio of interesting projects across an increasingly busy and critical sector.
This position offers the opportunity to be involved in the design and management of a diverse range of river and coastal projects, including:
- Lowland drainage
- Flood risk management schemes
- River engineering
- Strategic developments for public and private sector clients
You’ll contribute to some of the largest and most important flood risk management projects in the region, protecting people, properties, infrastructure from flooding, and improving habitats for nature.
We’re seeking someone to support in the design, coordination, and delivery of projects, with excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with clients, contractors, and regulatory authorities. Your involvement will span from concept to completion, including construction stage support, ensuring sound engineering decisions at every turn.
The Position
As a key member of our Rivers and Coastal Management team, you will be tasked with:
- Preparing designs, specifications, and reports for:
- Flood risk management schemes
- River and coastal engineering projects
- Communicating design information throughout all stages of project development, from concept to construction.
- Managing NEC contracts (experience desirable but not essential).
- Supporting team colleagues with high-quality design checks (ensuring strong QA processes).
- Liaising with external stakeholders, including:
- The Environment Agency
- Marine Management Organisation
- Other relevant authorities, securing necessary consents.
- Coordinating client and contractor relationships, and collaborating with multi-disciplinary Stantec teams.
- Supporting projects during the construction phase, including:
- Addressing technical queries
- Conducting quality inspections
- Mentoring and developing early career team members to foster internal growth.

Requirements
To thrive in this role, you’ll need:
- A Civil Engineering degree (or related field).
- Progress towards achieving Chartered professional status.
- Relevant responsibility experience in design-focused roles.
- Multi-disciplinary collaboration experience, particularly in specifying and designing infrastructure projects.
- Experience working with contractors during construction supervision and quality monitoring phases.
- Strong independent working skills, with an emphasis on delivering high-quality technical output.
- AutoCAD experience (advantageous but not mandatory).
