Band 4 Assistant Practitioner/Registered Nurse Associate – Eye Outpatients (Part-Time, Fixed Term)
Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is thrilled to offer a fantastic opportunity to join our Eye Outpatients department. This is a part-time, fixed-term position in our busy, dynamic team.
About the Role
We’re seeking a highly motivated, professional individual with leadership potential who wants to contribute to a growing healthcare team. Ideal candidates are forward-thinking, flexible, and reliable—preferably with clinical experience in ophthalmics (though training will be provided). This role requires someone who can supervise, mentor, and motivate peers in a fast-paced environment.
The Eye Outpatients service runs from Monday to Saturday, providing up to 200 patient consultations per session across two locations: Southampton and Lymington hospitals. The team consists of over 50 staff, so candidates must thrive in a collaborative, evolving setting.

Main Responsibilities
Clinical & Developmental Duties
- Demonstrate clinical expertise as a role model within ophthalmics, ensuring high-quality care aligns with NHS standards.
- Facilitate learning—support staff/learners, mentor peers, and foster a positive clinical environment.
- Plan and implement health promotion strategies, assessing patient needs and contributing to preventive care.
- Corporate with multifaculty teams (doctors, optometrists, admin) to enhance service delivery.
- Ensure compliance—maintain safety, equality, and diversity standards in practice.

Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
Essential Criteria
▹ Nurses Associate registered with the NMC or ▹ Assistant Practitioner with a health-related Foundation Degree (e.g., Health and Social Care) ▹ If neither, an overseas nursing equivalent at MQF/UK Level 5 (with evidence).
▹ Proof of numeracy & literacy at Level 2 (agency or equivalent—training must be in place).
▹ Supervised clinical work experience—in an acute hospital setting—preferably within a multidisciplinary team.
▹ Experience handling complex/sensitive information (confidently).
▹ Strong working knowledge of nursing procedures within acute environments.
Desirable Benefits
