Assistant Practitioner / Registered Nurse Associate – Eye Outpatients Department (Band 4) Fixed Term, Part-Time
About the Role
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is excited to invite applications for a Band 4 Assistant Practitioner / Registered Nurse Associate within our vibrant Eye Outpatients Department—a dynamic, high-volume team spanning Southampton and Lymington hospitals, handling up to 200 patient consultations per session (Mon–Sat).
This is a crucial opportunity to join a growing team that prioritises professional development, leadership, and collaboration. The right candidate will embody adaptability, forward-thinking ethos, teaching ability, and trustworthiness, while contributing to the ongoing expansion and modernisation of specialist ophthalmic services. Ophthalmic/medical experience is desirable but not essential, as comprehensive training will be provided. A strong emphasis is placed on Medicine Management competence.
Key Responsibilities
This role is pivotal in ensuring efficient, high-quality eye outpatient services. Core duties include:

Clinical expertise & patient care
- Demonstrate clinical competence within ophthalmology, adhering to best practice.
- Act as a role model for staff development and clinical decision-making.
- Assess and address patients’ health and well-being needs, promoting preventive care.

Service improvement & development
- Contribute to continuous quality improvement and feedback-driven enhancements.
- Monitor health, safety, and security standards in service delivery.

Requirements
Essential Criteria
✔ Eligible registration in one of the following:
- Nursing Associate on the NMC (Nursing & Midwifery Council)
- Assistant Practitioner degree (e.g., Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care).
- Overseas nursing qualification demonstrating equivalents to UK Level 5.
✔ Numeracy & literacy at minimum UK Level 2 standard (e.g., Functional Skills).
✔ General experience in a NHS/healthcare setting, demonstrating:
- Wetness to supervision, integral work in multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to handle complex, sensitive patient information.
✔ Nursing procedure knowledge, aligned with acute hospital settings.

✔ Medicine Management competency is a shared requirement.
Desirable Experience & Skills
🔹 Acute care unit training e.g., medicine administration, or bothness Colombo preceptorships. 🔹 Extended clinical skills such as intravenous cannulation or ophthalmic-specific techniques. 🔹 Prior ophthalmic experience, where clinical certification or support aligns. 🔹 Competency in digital health tools/security practices.
