Assistant Practitioner/ Registered Nurse Associate
Job Title: Band 4 Assistant Practitioner/Registered Nurse Associate – Eye Outpatients (Fixed Term, Part-Time)
Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is thrilled to offer a dynamic role in our bustling, fast-paced Eye Outpatients Department.
About the Role
We are seeking a highly motivated individual with strong professionalism, leadership potential, and a desire to contribute to our expanding team in a part-time, fixed-term position.
The Eye Outpatients Department balances exceptional patient care with a positive work-life environment, operating Monday to Saturday. This productive yet flexible role requires adaptability, creative problem-solving skills, and a commitment to motivating our multidisciplinary team of over 50 staff across Southampton and Lymington hospitals, where we see up to 200 patients per session.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- Drive, professionalism, and personal accountability
- Ability to supervise, mentor, and coach staff
- Forward-thinking approach
- Ophthalmic background is preferred but not essential (full training provided)
Ideally, you would be Medicines Management competent.
Main Duties (Key Responsibilities)
Leadership & Development
- Works Collaboratively to develop personal knowledge and clinical expertise while fostering a supportive learning environment for staff and learners
- Acts as a role model within ophthalmic clinical practice

Patient Care & Wellbeing
- Assesses and addresses patients’ health and well-being needs, ensuring clinical excellence
- Demonstrates strong communication skills and personalises interactions across diverse populations
Service Improvement
- Monitors health, safety, and security in line with Trust standards
- Supports quality improvement with data-driven decision-making (storage, input, and dissemination)
Medicines Management
- Ensures compliance with standards, documented at competency level (desirable)
Requirements & Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- One of the following:
- Registered as an Assistant Practitioner (Health-related Foundation Degree)
- Registered as a Nursing Associate (NMC)
- Overseas-nursing-trained with UK academic Level 5 equivalent
- Minimum national Level 2 numeracy & literacy
- Undergraduate supervision experience in a multidisciplinary setting
- Practiced informing/communicating complex/sensitive information effectively
- Knowledge of acute hospital nursing procedures & practices

Desirable Criteria
- Assessed competence in administering medications
- Completion of apprenticeship units aligning with UHS Care Group standards
- Extended clinical skills (e.g., venepuncture, cannulation)
